Hi folks, I own a 1970 Cuda with a 340 engine in it with a date stamp of 4/71. Although it is not a numbers matching car, I was curious if this engine would have been for a 1971 or a 1972 Mopar. Any help would be appreciated in solving this question.

Thanks,
Ron

Date stamp of 4/71 ??? The date STAMP is a 4 digit code that is stamped on the left cylinder bank on the front of the engine.

What is the VIN stamped on the lower right pan rail , that will tell you what year car it ended up in.

Stamped 4/71? Where is that stamped? There are 3 numbers to look for on a 340, the CASTING number and 2 STAMPED in numbers. The first stamped number is on the face of the block just below the drivers head/deck surface, up to 1971 should look something like "GW3403345XXXXX" etc. later years had different stampings in this location. Then the VIN stamping on the machined pad on the lower passenger side of the block just above the oil pan rail. The casting date is a month/day/year on the side of the block.

Sorry, It's from April of 1971, just don't remember the exact date. Yes, it has all the correct digits as they were stamped.

Sounds like you should post a picture of what you are describing. Bottom line, if it was ASSEMBLED in April of 1971 it was likely used in a late build 1971 model year car.

Yes, thanks folks for the help. The VIN will tell me what year car it ended up in, got that. I was trying to figure out if it was a 71 or 72 340. The engine is blue...and from what I read 340's built after or around April of 1971 were painted blue instead of orange. And many of these blue 340's ended up in 71's as well.

Yes late 71's were painted blue....You really need to post a pic of the stamped numbers on the front of the block.
