With the timing cover off should my cam gear dot be at 6:00 or 12:00 to drop the dist. in at #1, just want to be sure it fires at the hit of the stater. Thanks

at 6 but there's more to check than just that

Simply turn the engine until the number one piston is at TDC on compression stroke(check with a screwdriver in #1 hole). Make sure the distributor is pointing to number one. If not, you'll end up timing it on number six. It won't run like that. Then simply turn the cam gear until it lines up dot to dot. Like This:

No need to have the cover off. Use the balancer and timing marks. Roll it up on number 1 about 15° BTDC align the rotor and cap to number 1 and your golden.

12 o'clock - #1 firing

6 o'clock - #6 firing

can be confusing

If you align the two dots so there closest to each the cam is in the overlap of #1 cylinder, exhaust is closing, intake valve is opening and #6 has just fired on the compression and firing stroke You can aling the two dots on number 1 overlap and install the disributor so it is pointing at #6 spark plug wire and actaully time it on #6 and be fine #1 and #6 are at the top of there stroke together(90 degree V8)on every revolution, the cam travels half as fast as the crankshaft so the motor opens and closes the valves every other revolution, hence the four stroke engine firing order Now to answer your question the cam gear dot should be at 12.00 o clock to drop the distibutor in to fire #1 on the hit of the starter, you might want to put a little advance in it so it will start right away
