Hi guys
Going 6pak on my mild 440. Looking for a good mech pump. Do I need to have 8-9.5 psi or can I run a 6-8.5 Im looking at Carter pumps and was going for the dual diaphram 8-9.5psi but I see both pumps have 120gph

cheers Dave

We had some bad luck with 4 Carter pumps.Went back to Holley pumps.Mine feeds my 1050 Dominator with no problems.6 to 7 psi is more than enough for what you have.8 to 9 will probally blow the needle valve off the seat and flood.Rocky

I been running Carter street or strip mechanical pumps on my sm and BBblk 6 pak motors, for the last 25+ yrs, with never a failure, nice pumps,....if your running the stock rubber needle seats stay with the street pump, as the strip pump (8+ psi) will pressurize the needles when they close, and force them into the seats, preventing them from opening, resulting in no fuel DAMHIK ....if you want to run the strip pump, Holley has high volume/pressure steel or titanium seat assys,.....myself I generally run the strip pumps, and steel seats

We ran Carters also.Till I hade 4 bad ones. One was street strip SB and never pumped. One BB the arm broke and the spring went in the pan.Replaced it with my 25 year old Holley till we could get a new one.One lasted a week in my BB another only had 3 to 4 psi street strip BB.Put a Holley on and had 6 to 7 psi.Rocky

Everything in that quote is incorrect. Fuel pressure holds the needle and seat open not closed and fuel level pushes the float against the back end of the needle pushing it against the seat and closing off the fuel flow. High fuel pressure will prevent the needle and seat from closing causing flooding exactly opposite of no fuel.

Steel needles are for use with fuels that eat viton needles. Has nothing to do with fuel pressure.

To answer the original poster: Use the low pressure pump without a regulator or use the high pressure pump with a regulator. Use the factory viton needle with either one.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

what is the set-up? Holley makes a good pump, as does Carter. If it's stockish even a NAPA pump will work. I used the stock 440-6 replacement pump on a 440-6, ported iron heads and Mopar 528 solid and has zero fuel issues. I'd think 9psi would also be too much pressure. 7-8 should be plenty.
