Working on our 05 hemi, just put in 16 plugs. I understand there's no IAC motor? What's the best way to clean the throttle body? Can I spray carb cleaner in the intake? Should I take it off? What's the best way? TIA

Well, the service manual says to never clean it, and if there's ever an issue just replace it. Not saying I agree with that, but official procedure is to throw it away if it needs to be cleaned

Meanwhile...I like to take it off, and hold it in a catch pan with the butterfly control motor pointing up so that carb cleaner will not run inside the motor/throttle butterfly control. Hose with carb cleaner, scrub with toothbrush over and over until clean.

Don't spray carb cleaner directly into the intake unless you're willing to let it sit with no throttle body on it for a long time to let it dry thoroughly....if any of it stays puddled in the manifold...if it should pop when you fire it up, it will break the plastic intake. For the same reason I wouldn't recommend spraying anything in there while it's running.

To clean right behind the throttle body in the intake a little, I like to use cloths/paper towels soaked in carb cleaner and wipe it out.

They build up alot of nasty gunk on the backside of the TB pretty quickly, because of the way the CCV is set up....

Plug time is a good time for a pcv valve too, if it hasn't been replaced yet

Thank you very much, makes a lot of sense. I didn't think spraying any carb cleaner into the intake would be a good idea. Great idea on the PCV valve, Thanks again.

I used Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner on my old TBI Ramcharger many years ago. The TB came out really clean on the inside after using it. You might need to change plugs after using it though if your chambers are carboned up? I'd check the service manual for your vehicle first to see if there are any restrictions.

I agree with Zippy, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

While I agree with Zippy that "by the book" it says not to clean them, It is something that does need to be done.
Early 5.7`s will set minimum idle airflow DTC`s if enough crap gets built up (P2174 or P2175 with P2106) Be careful as alot of flat rater`s will start tossing parts at them for this.
Take it off is the best way (Super easy) and use a rag soaked with spray carb or throttle body cleaner..DO NOT spray it directly on the body and don`t use anything abrasive.

That is good info to add, and I'll back Rick up on that...my '03 had several 2000-series dtc's...cleaned TB, cleared codes, and they never came back. Sure beats following the service manual

Mine was the worst one I've ever seen, though...it had a little over over 200k on it at the time...

I have a BT catch can on my 6.1 and replaced the stock TB with a ported one at the 24k mile mark. The stock TB was as clean as the new one and there was no accumulation inside the intake belly. I get about 1 inch of oil in the catch can every 3000 mile oil change that never gets to the TB. Don't know if it can be fitted on the older 5.7s.

It can be fitted to the older 5.7s and it does indeed help

Not as clean: any of the cais that use a metal tube that relocates the breather hose further away from the intake also help....the oil tends to puke out into the filter instead of the intake. I have that on mine, catch can does a better job though.
