Hey guys,

I'm looking for cam recommendations for my 5.7 Hemi. It's in a 04 Ram quad cab 1500 and I want to improve the towing. I have 3.92 gears. I have a cold air intake and will be adding headers, high flow cats and mufflers, but I'm looking to improve the towing capability, not hot rod it. I tow about 9,000 lbs in an enclosed trailer. Would appreciate any cam suggestions.

Here are a couple I have found that look promising:

Tri-Power Xtreme™ Hydraulic Roller Camshafts

http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=609&sb=2

COMP Cams Xtreme Fuel Injected Camshafts

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-112-501-11/

but, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks !!

Leave the cam stock. Any aftermarket cam is going to have more duration than your stock cam, which is what you don't want for towing. And any torq/towing cam is going to be so similar to stock that it wouldn't be worth the trouble and expense to change.

I agree, the current cam is probably pretty much the optimal one for torque and sub 5000 RPM HP.

what's your beef with it now? take off from a stop? steady state cruising? if it's the former, maybe look into a higher stall torque converter, to get the engine in the powerband sooner from a stop instead...the latter, when the TQ is locked up, shorter tires or more gear would help.

Maybe look for a progamable tuner that has a tow setting. Then you can switch from stock to the tow tune when you need to.

bigger truck? 9000 lbs is a lot of weight for a a half ton

maybe a gear ratio change would help, I put 4.56 in mine and it helped, but, at 65 mph now I'm turning about 2400 rpm in OD

Yep, time to stepup to a bigger truck. Your over the limit now. http://dodgeram.info/2004/load-tow/1500.html

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I've done some upgrades to the truck, the weight is not an issue for the suspension. The problem is it pings and struggles to go over the mountains.

So, I'm looking for more power and torque, so it doesn't struggle so bad. This shouldn't be rocket science, but all I find on line is hot rod stuff. I'm surprised no one has wanted to improve the towing.

downshift...

a little bigger cam might help with towing at speed, if you downshift so your cruise RPM is near the torque peak.

I think I would do everything your going to do then a programmer and last look at a cam can't see any cam that would work well for towing be much different that what you have.
Opening up the exhaust flow will likely help the most and with a programmer I'll bet you will be happy. you may need 93 when your towing in the big hills!
