A friend of mine has a 625 CFM 9635S Competition Series AFB, and I was wondering if it would be any better than a 1406. I can't get rid of this hot start problem with my 1406. I know the original AFBs and AVSs didn't have problems like these new carbs have. Just wanted to see if it would be any better than the Eddy, or if it is a "Weber wonder" as well. It would be going on my 78 Fury, LA 360, magnum heads, dual plane M1, xe256, 2200 stall, 3.55s, headers and 2.5" duals. Or would I be better off with an old AVS or vacuum secondary Holley?

I have 9636's or something like that on my Hemi, the gas is gone in a few days and they're a pain compared to the rebuilt 71 AVS I run on my 383 truck.
Honestly I much prefer the AVS's over anything else on the street. I really like a good TQ as well but finding a good one is much harder than finding and dialing in a decent AVS it seems.

I have one of those on my 68 Charger. Been there for 15+ years..

A really great carb, jetted a little fat for stock motors. Great performance.

Before you swap carbs, intstall a thick carb gasket. 3/8 works well. Today fuel is crap, works with fuel Injection but not real carb friendly.

I also have an electric pump in back to help with fuel boiling.
The factory vapor seperator will allow a small amount of hot fuel to return to the tank..that should help a bit as well.

Change to a hi volume mechanical pump (carter,holley etc)and use the heat dissipating thick carb gasket as mentioned above.Problem over.

I already have the thick insulator gaskets from edelbrock. It helped a little, but still having problems. I have over a dozen great running Thermoquads, but can't use an adapter plate due to available hood clearance. I prefer Thermoquads over anything

As said the hot start problem is because of the piss they pass of as gasoline , add an electric pump .

I forgot to add there is also a huge bog when the secondaries kick open. I went back to box stock jetting, Even at 3500rpm, it will fall on its face for a second or two. It won't even break the tires loose if ya give it a stall and try to launch it. It's also getting about 8mpg.

Sounds like the carb is way out of tune which ins't surprising if you have it out of the box set,, adding the other carb may or may not fix it , ask your friend if you can try it and see how it runs .

Yeah, I dont mind making this carbs work, but I wish I knew a good starting point as far as jetting. I hate to just start throwing jets a it since they're about $10 a pair.

You can't blame a hot start problem on the carb.


I'm starting to wonder if stuff like these blue pumps with non-return regulators might actually exaggerate vapor problems.

Frankly the first thing I'd do is get a vapor return system in the car. If you use an inline filter up front, Wix makes a couple with vapor return built into the filter

Don't forget about squirter size when trying to get rid of a bog/hesitation. Also the counterweights can be ground off to lighten them up and get better response on the secondaries.

The Carter 9636 seemed to have a slight part throttle hesitation which I always felt was from the counterweights on my old Duster340-4spd. My present carb an Edelbrock 750cfm #1407 has excellent response from a stop or part throttle.No problem lighting the tires up at all.

Today's crappy fuel does have alot to do with hot start problems. I use a 1" plastic 4-hole spacer on top of a Weiand Stealth hi-rise but I have plenty of room due to the six-pack scoop. In hot weather hot restarts I normally hold the gas pedal down some.

I don't notice any difference between the Carter and Edelbrock carbs I have used. I think the Edelbeock thunder series (AVS style) has boosters in the secondary where the Carters didn't, but I haven't used a thunder series carb yet?
The main issue I have with type of carb is getting the fuel level set correctly. If the fuel level is too low from either low pressure or the floats set too low, the carb won't have a good accelerator pump shot and will alaways seem to run lean. I usually error on the side of setting the floats for a high fuel level, and after running the car, pull the top of the carb and making sure the fuel level is upto the notch in the splash sheild.
