I'm having a problem with the wifes 2001 Sebring. It is in limp mode and if I reset it it goes right back. I have cleaned all sensor and computer connections and it still is bad. Had the battery unhooked for a day and still no good. I get codes 700 (trany fault)605 (pcm rom error} and 700p/d {?} allso if I do the 3 on off key deal I get 700 then after a bit the check engine lite blinks 5 times. I have pretty much narrowed it down to either the PCM (605) or TCM (700) problem is I don't want to buy both if I only need one so what I'm asking is which one is most likely to be the bad one. I called a dealer but they weren't willing to help unless I took the car to them. I'm 40 miles away and driving at 25-30 for that far is just not in my vocabulary. any help would be apriciated.

it could be in the wiring to and from...sometimes it pays for the dealer to look at it for you..they most likely know where to look right away..did you try to google the same problem?...

Tranny shops will generally scan it for free and fix it for much less than a dealer (at least around here). Are you sure it's not solenoid packs, valve body or sensors? I find it hard to believe the computer is having an issue compared to the mechanical parts.

Make sure to check all the grounds. They can cause a lot of problems. It's rare to have the PCM & TCM go out at the same time, unless it's a flood vehicle. Also, do a search to see if there is a TSB for your problem. It may just need a reflash of the PCM.

Thanks for the replies. I talked to a engine computer repair shop and they were pretty adimant it is the PCM now here is the part that I don't get. the tech said it was caused by the battery being out of "parameters" and that caused the ROM to fail. Said I had to start it with a diffrent battery after replacing the PCM or I would have the same problem again? So am i to believe that on these newer cars with computers controling everything that if your battery is "weak" you are going to damage one of the computers? I find it hard to believe that these systems are that sensitive.
Well I have a new PCM on the way and I will take a known good battery and put it in the car just in case but the battery just dosen't make a lot of sence to me. I have had no traditinal signs of the battery going bad.

standign voltage shoudl be 12.6V, charging/running 13.5 to 14.5. Voltage naturally drops during engine crank, but the electronics are designed for that and even calibrate injector pulses for the lower voltage. I really doubt the battery has anything to do with it. For a quick check, hook a battery charger with a start mode to it while cranking or jumper to another vehicle if you can. P0700 is a generic trans code meanign the trans has a code set. Tranny shop or dealer or sometone should scan it. Maybe you can buy or rent or borrow a scanner for the TCM at an auto parts store.

My car threw a few P07xx numbers and it was just the solenoid pack (common problem by that age) but could also be stickly/slow valve body and speed sensors. None of which require a full rebuild or even a big bill.

They said that the p0605 was the hard failure and that the 700 was a result of the 605. then he said that the 605 was caused by a bad battery and if I installed the new computer with the same battery that the new computer would fail also. That part I just don't get. The car cranks just fine and I would think that once the battery started going bad I would notice a reduction in cranking "power" first as that has the most draw on the battery. I had a problem with the main hot battery cable where it connects to the power distrubution box. That may have caused my problem. I am going to remove and clean those connections again before I install the new computer.
