Did you try a search of that topic, I know it's been talked about on hear before. I remember that there were a couple different stiles depending who did the conversion. I do know it's not the same as the front.
"Did you try a search of that topic,..." SEARCH...?? Let me know how that works out,,, "Sorry, you can't do another search right now....try again later.." It's much faster and less bothersome to just ask here again!!!

Chapper, I see what you mean, punched in dart wheel wells and get valve covers? what's with that? Anyway, Even the new version of the ss/h dart cars have changed their wheel wells to a more rounded look. The originals looked like crap, a contoured to the tire radius would have looked better. To the original poster, if you plan on going to car shows/ cruise ins with the original type wheel well cut outs, 95 percent of the people will think you really did a hack job on your car as only the MOPAR purist will know how they looked back in the day. Just my opinion.

I got one of Bill's patterns. It makes a huge opening, almost to the body line, and not very attractive. After some experimenting, I think I will use something similar to the front openings. It isn't correct, but will be plenty large enough and decidedly more attractive.
I have a spare pair of front fenders that are pretty rusty. I am going to try and use the body lines above the front wheel openings on the rears. I don't know if it will work, but if it does, it may look factory.

The template that I got from Bill is nothing at all like the front openings. Not in size or shape. The SS openings are much larger. And if you look at the old pics of the cars being loaded at the factory, the openings were huge and kinda square looking.

Mark, do you know of a source for the rear view mirror block-off plate?

Greg at SSandafx.com has the mirror delete plate.
As for the rear wheel opening.....there is a long story that goes with those so sit down and make yourself comfortable.
Here is a picture of a real car that was still at Hurst when the picture was taken. This is how they were done ORIGINALY....nobody can argue with this picture....this is how this car was done. If you look very close you can still see the the soot left over after they brazed the seems shut.

How I did my cut outs. I took that same picture and projected it onto a piece of poster board. I moved the projector back and forth till the wheel measures 15". At that point I know that the measurements would be close.

when randy hopkins painted his dart a long time ago,, before he restored it back to the mr 4 speed paint job,, guys would look into the engine compartment and say "wow" who beat the hell out of your shock tower,,, which the answer was,, hurst did,, they took a hammer to blast that area back,, and used a torch to cut the holes in for the hood pins in the cowl area, and the battery tray in the trunk

I am not sure where this nonsense about the Hemi Darts rear wheel openings were the same as the front (left or right) came from but In my opinion, this is not the case. While there are some slight differences between cars and they were hand modified(sometimes by different people)there was a template that was used. Here is a side view of a "real" Hemi Dart (back in the day) and you can see that they do not appear to be the same or are they reversed. Sorry, I do not have a template but could probably point you in the correct direction. If anyone has genuine questions about these cars - I will try to help. Thanks, Mark Janaky 1968 Hemi S/S Registry
Thank you Mark , Troy,& Jeff for the "Correct " wisdom that you have shared, especially about the shock towers. I am used to seing the beat up variety style shock towers on the beaters that I run. These cars were built to be racers, not show cars.

Here is something many people miss. You must leave an inch or so extra all the way around so you can fold it over and weld it to the inner wheel well. If you don't you will have a big problem.
I too have seen many cars where the front of the wheel well is angled forward like in the picture below. I believe this was modified by many of the racers back then. When Hurst originally did the cutting they removed alot from the top and the back but they did not remove much at all from the front. In the old days to put the taller slicks on you had to open up the front of the wheel well so that is what they did. I personally believe that the picture below was taken from a modified wheel well....not a Hurst modified wheel well.

again. i am going to state..only for what its worth.. but .. i read ..an article it was either in hemmings news or the newspaper that goes around the hershey car show..it might have been the atlantic city car auction newsletter .. i read this in the early 80's it was an interview with the guy who worked at hurst and he said..the took templates off the front wheel wells..and reversed them. this is what was approved..weather they just free handed it after this...who knows.. but the first set of rears cut was done based off the shape of the front fenders. take it for what its worth. the shape my have gotten lost when the folding of the seams was applied.. i have actually looked at this..and it seems plauseable.. however everyone has there opinion..and if it was free handed after the first one then who knows. best of luck to all. cheapst...
