I have two core 727 trannies. Is one better than the other for rebuild? One is a 71-2 C body trans, #3515847, 440 non hp unit. The second is a 70 B/E body trans, #3410668, 383 4bl piece. I wanted to build a nice street/strip type trans to go behind a 451 stroker motor. Not a race car, but something I can place in drive and go or have the option to shift up and down manually if needed. Thanks

The 383 unit will probably have a 4 clutch front drum and 4 pinion planets , the lo po unit will not. But the 71/72 will have the wide bushing stator support /front drum which was an upgrade. You can use the front pump from the 72 unit , get a wide bushing 4 clutch front drum and do a rebuild using a quality kit .

Contact John Cope at CRT for some sound advice and parts to do the job .

well, to my knowledge, only the 440 trannies had the 4 gear pinion set, and some heavy-duty ordered 4 wheel drive small block trucks. I tore down 2-1973 440LP newyorker trannies, and they both had the heavy 4 pinion planetaries. the 383 HP trannies would more than likely not have this option after 1969. I would build up the 440 trans, but you could also tear down the 383 trans to prove me wrong. just my 2 cents

Thanks for the help. Sounds like the 440 unit would be the better choice. Can anyone recommend someone who is good with 727 trannies in the Phx, AZ area? Also whats the going rate to build something like this. I can R/R it, just need someone to do the trans rebuild itself. I think I basically need the trans rebuilt with good parts and a shift kit to do what I want. Would this do it??? Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

I have one other question. Regarding the 440 trans I have. The yahoos I got the car from busted the park lock out of it. When you place the car in park it wont keep the car from rolling. Is this repairable and is it expensive to fix? Thanks

Have you tried adjusting the linkage? Will it go into park if you move the lever by hand with the linkage disconnected?

Stumpy, I did check that, no luck. The problem is internal.

Can anyone shed some light on what is probably damaged with the park lock mechanism inside the the trans? Is this repairable? If so, what would its repair add to the cost of a rebuild? Also, would a basic rebuild using quality clutches, steels, bands and a transgo tf 2 kit build a decent mostly street, a little strip type trans? I want to have the option of placing the car in drive and going, or manually shifting the trans up and down if needed. Any other parts or things I should ask the trans builder to do to accomplish this? Can you recommend someone in the Phx, AZ area that's good with 727's?

the park rod can come simply unhooked and nothing damaged just no park. its not too hard to check out but you have to drop the pan and fluid of course. if the rod or locking mech. is bad a used piece cant be very expensive.
a stock rebuild is good for 400+ hp. the transgo2 kit is a good one for street / strip. you would be able to shift it yourself but put a ratchet shifter in too unless you already have a slap stick to get good shifts, ive tried to coulmn shift a 727 behind a 383 on the strip and it doesnt work out too well everytime. i went to a b&m reatchet shifter, then never missed or over shifted again . im in florida so i cant help with a shop out there but good luck.

Thanks for the feedback. I do have another question. Which kickdown lever should I upgrade to the 4.2 or 5.0?
