Will the crank and rods from a 65 413 drop right into a 78 440 or is the journal size or something else different? Thanks

Should drop in, but make sure you use the converter and balancer from the 413 qith the forged 413 crank. (Cast 440 pcs would be different)

Great swap!! GOOD steel crank, strong rods (better than LY's) just use ARP rod bolts and nuts. Shot peening adds the final touch to the rods but it's an option. USE the 413 damper and flexplate. Any 413, 426 Wedge or 440 FORGED crank converter setup will work (read: INTERNAL BALANCE ONLY) External balance will give the motor
the and reduce it's life span!!

The '65 413 had the LY rods.

The materials for the '65 forgings were of BETTER
steel than the late model 440's (73 to 78) EXCEPT for the "famed"
six pack rods and HEMI forgings. These were the BEST production forgings that were used in both street/strip and bracket racing. Not to say the later units are weak, but the earlier forgings were certainly "strip tested" thoroughly.

Not different in production numbers, type (LY's) or dimensions, but in strength. Steel was steel back then.

Hmmm... wonder when they changed the metallurgy... As in what year. Not that i'm really looking to buy or use specifically older rods. I've got tons ov LY's kicking around, and would probably just buy new rods anyways, but its fun to know.

I've never had one, but i've always thought ov a 413 as an engine you could really beat on... Even more than a 440. Almost as stout as a 383...

Hmmm... now what would an earlier 383 be like... Bloody bombproof!
