I picked up a continuity and voltage tester am trying to understand what I'm looking for. If I'm checking for continuity along a wire, i place the ends of the tester at each end of the wire, and if it shows continuity then the wire between the end pieces has continuity.

Does it only test for continuity on something with power running thru it? I ask because there is a light that lights up to signal continuity.

If I touch two points in my manifold, the light comes on signaling continuity. If i touch the manifold with one end and the firewall with the other, it shows continuity. pretty much any two meal points under my hoodshow continuity. Is this normal or does it signal a power wire grounding out somewhere?

thanks

(1) A test light has a needle probe on a plastic case w a light bulb in it then a pigtail w an alligator clip on the end of the pigtail. (2) A continuity tester is the same but also has a battery inside there w the bulb so it is self powered and you use it just like the Ohmmeter in a VOM which means you disconnect the wire/circuit that you want to test and see if the light lights up which tells you you have continuity. The test light (1) you clip the alligator clip to a known good ground and touch the probe to wire ends etc & if the bulb lights up then the "wire ends etc" is hot (has fire)

The continuity tester is really only testing the resistance between the two test leads. If the resistance is low enough, it's assumed to have a good connection.

A test whenever you turn the meter on is to tough the meter leads together. You should get nearly 0 ohms, or perfect continuity.

I never test continuity with power in the circuit. Make sure everything is off. Battery does not need to be disconnected though.

Your test on the manifold/firewall just shows that everything is connected to ground, like it should be.

If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.
