Ok, service manual says to engage the park sprag with a screw driver before installing vb. How the heck does the sprag "engage"? I can't get it to stay out of the way. Been laying under the truck, in the driveway wrestling with this thing for 1/2 hour now...it's getting cold out and my frustration level is just about maxed ....

Oh...this is a 727 in a 77 4x4 plow truck.

I'd really like to get this thing put back together tonight... cuz it's not going to get any warmer later this week.

This one is being a royal PITA. I've tried wiggling, pushing, cursing...lol the park rod just will NOT go past the sprag.
They make them so they come out easy enough....wish they went back in that easy.

this thing STILL is not going in...the sprag won't move far enough to let the park rod go past it.

PLEASE...any one have any ideas?

I havent popped one in, in a long time. But I know that paw stops the tailshaft from turning. And there are gaps where the paw wont go in, if I remember correctly. You need to look in there where the paw needs to snap in and turn the tail shaft untill things line up/open up so the paw can be snapped in.

This may be abit incorrect as its been awhile like I said. I do remember having some troubles myself but figured it out after I viewed into the paws receptical and turned the tail shaft. mike

Appreciate the tip. It came out with no hassles at all. The problem is...

1. being 4x4, I can't easily turn a driveshaft
2. its sitting in my driveway, so there is no easy way to get the truck up in the air, to spin a driveshaft.

Might try rolling it forward a little bit and see if that helps. I've tried rocking the truck fore and aft, but that didn't do anything (other than get me some exercise...lol)

They can be a pain sometimes, you need to turn the driveshaft to get things to line up then it will fall in place. Stay warm.

If Nothing has changed or moved in the drivline since you pulled it out it should pop back in.

{The most important thing I can say is get up there and do a visual on the paws receptical, to see if things appear lined up to recieve the paw.}

If they are, I also remember that the shaft slid in easier if more properly aligned. Dont just expext it to pop in at a angle.

You get the paw manipulated in first at the best angle then follow with the VB install.

If you chose to roll the truck forward or back dont do it blindly. Have a visual into the paws receptical. I know, you need a Helper for this.

WOOT!!!

Rocked the truck as far forward and back as I could. First few times it didn't do anything. Last time I tried it, I vented some frustration...lol. That allowed the vb to finally pop into place! WOO HOO!!!

Gotta finish putting it back together...just gotta put the pan on yet tonight. I'll fill it with fluid and hook up the kick-down linkage tomorrow.

For those who didn't see my previous post, the plow truck broke the low-rev strut. I put a new one in earlier today, only to have it not seat all the way, and pop back out. So this is the SECOND TIME TODAY I've had to wrestle with this thing.... First time, the vb wasn't an issue. Anyhoo... new strut is properly seated this time, vb is back in, shift linkage is hooked up, NS switch installed and hooked up...just gotta toss the pan back on and clean up the tools and such. Then I'm taking a SHOWER! I've been marinating in ATF since early this afternoon.....

Thanks for all the help folks!
