Long time no chat?? Hows things going eh?

Well I have my block ready to be decked and borred. I have been looking into buying a stroker kit for my 440 block. I am just not sure which route I should venture down, 440source route, the Mancini route, or other 440 stroker kit routes etc.?

Any info would be great to help me decide where to blow my savings!!

I have the 440Source 528 kit and had no issues with it at all. HOWEVER, do youself a big favour and have your block sonic checked first to make sure it can take the bore you want to go with AND have the deck heights checked first as well. My "stock" block ended up having the decks below spec before decking so I'm having to run a tighter quench than I would have liked. Had I checked that before ordering my kit I could have ordered a different piston and not had an issue. Also, go with aluminum main caps. Yes, its more work, yes its more money and yes, most engine builders will tell you they aren't necessary BUT they're used to building Chevy's. Aluminum caps in the RB is cheap insurance. The 440Source ones seem decent for the price.

Doing it over again I'd go with the 512 instead of the 528.

considering one in the future. why would you have gone w lesser cubes? More compression height for longevity?

Comp. ht. wasn't a concern ... its a stroker motor !!!

Primarily so as not to have to bore the block .055 over. The 528 uses a 4.375 stroke crank. I could have gone with a .030 or .040 bore but then the bore would have been less than the stroke.

Going with the 4.25 stroke crank you can go .030 over and the bore is larger than the stroke. This, by the way, yeilds a 505"

The 528 uses a 4.375 stroke crank so an external oil system is almost a must. Clearancing the block for the longer stroke was no big deal at all but it did need it.

And no matter what I ran the numbers through, the 512/505 made the same HP and Torque as the 528 (which turns out to be 526 with the .055 overbore).

I pieced mine together. I used a K1 crank, Compstar rods and Diamond pistons. I think I got everything from Dram here on moparts. I will say what a torque monster. I also did the 4.25 crank so I didn't have to go with external oiling.

I have the 4.25 crank form ohio. It checked out good, and it's been in my motor for 5 years now.

I just ordered the 512 kit and heads today from 440 source. Ken told me the 512 was a better choice than the 493 that i was going to go with. The 512 should yeild about 10.25 compression where as the 493 was going to be about 11.5.

I have that exact kit and heads in my 440! It performs really good! But now I want more power!

Call them back and upgrade to the CNC'd heads (if its within your budget)- otherwise you're no further ahead than using a stock 906!

When you get the heads you'll DEFINATELY want to upgrade the retainers and locks and possibly the springs depending on your cam choice.

Did you get the "balanced" assy. - worth the few extra bucks!

Also, don't be disappointed if/when the pins don't fit the rods ... this is about the only thing that needs attention.

So..... How would I go about explaining the deck height issue to the machine shop? Is there some sort of specs for deck height that I need to know about or will the machine shop have sufficient knowledge?

I am only going to bore the minimum I can because my stock block is only .006 tapered, the machine shop said I could put it back together and run it like that and it would be okay, I figured hell I got it apart already.....

Deck height ...

1/2 the crank stroke + rod pin-to-pin length + piston comp ht. + whatever the "advertised" piston deck height is (usually a - #). All these #'s will be right beside the 440source kit # you ordered.

i.e.

4.25/2 + 7.1 + 1.43 -.010 = 10.645" deck ht.

You need a block with a minimum of about .010 MORE than that so it can be properly squared and leveled.
