Okay, i'm sick ov googling... I cant get under my car, or anywhere near it for that matter, right now to measure. I've found another shaft to replace my bent and apparently 'unfixable' one, and its 55 5/8" long. It has the big U-joints which i have and is apparently '29/30' spline yolk (no idea what mine is).

Will this fit? I seem to remember it being around 50-52"ish, but honestly that was years ago, i forget. I cant even find my Mopar chassis manual in my pile o books...

Help?

I'll get a measurement on my 71 Tuesday and get back to you. The car is apart right now and it'll be easy for me to measure. Send me a message to my Home to remind me.

According to the Parts Interchange Manual for 1972 440/727 auto w/8-3/4 rear Chargers, drive shaft specs are as follows:

PN 2996101, Type: 7290, Length: 50.68", Diameter: 3-1/4".

I hope this helps.

Haha, i've seen that list before... it still makes no sense.

Primetime, i'd appreciate that. Either way, i'm almost certain the 55" shaft is gonna be too long. Mine is too short as it came (1 1/2" spline showing, or more) and its bent. I could spend $300 to re-tube it, but i'd rather find a used one for half that or less, obviously. I'm just fixing it to sell the car, but i want it to be solid and correct.

My '71 Charger R/T 440,727, 8.75 has 50 5/8" long shaft. If you have the proper yokes you should be able to get it re-tubed for less than $300.00

I'd measure your car and see what you actually need...Don't go by what's in a book...Even a little off on the required measurement could cause trouble... The least of them being a vibration....

My guess is that someone already did that, and ended up with the 1 1/2" too short bent one thats in my car. I guess that the handy local $150 used one is out, its obviously too long. I'll get around to measuring my own car when the winter slop clears up, until then i thought some here might know.

That $300 is local, and apparently as good as it gets here. A new shaft is $600. I dont know what these guys are smoking here but that seems a bit high. Someone local must have a used shaft so i'll hold out for something here. I'm not ordering anything from elsewhere.

Thanks for the replies, it gives me at least a ballpark to look for until i can get under my own car.

Now primetime's got me wondering about something else. Assuming the car, engine, trans and yoke sizes are the same (big yokes), will there still be a difference between different 8 3/4" cases? as in 489 to 742...???
