you should double check your manual because I had a 2003 ram 2500 with the hemi and it did recommend 91 or above for fuel. I did some research back then and found that very few engines these days do need high octane fuel. The hemi falls into that category because it has high compression. I always ran mine on on 91 or above and never had any engine issues.........rust, however was a different story.

Ok maybe i missed it where is said 91 or better? I have been know to make mistakes once in awhile.
It's only like $0.20 a gallon more then 87 so i will start filling the tank with super from now on.

I looked in my 05 owners manual and it said "recomend 89" , I just looked in my 07's and it says the same thing...have always ran 87 with no problems ever...if towing I'll use 91

You are probably fine, but I believe they do better with a little more octane. I did have an 04 hemi truck and I always ran 87, but if I could go back in time I would probably have run atleast 89.
I only say that because of what I have noticed with my 2010 challenger. I run 93 now because of the tune, but I ran both 87 and 89 with the factory tune and data logging showed me quite a bit of knock on hard runs. I will also say that I could not hear it so just basing it off of sound doesn't mean it isn't happening or trying to happen.
just my .02

I have 94,000 on a 2007 and I have run 87 octane almost exclusively. I have tried 89 and 91, but I couldnt tell any difference.
We use 87 in our 2005 hemi.

I have an 04 Hemi Ram and the manual says to use 89, but you can use 87 as it will retard the timing to compensate. I tried all the grades to test the mpg and didn't see a whole of difference, especially when compared to the difference in price of the fuels. So, I mostly ran 87 for my day to day 45 mph commute driving. That's where the truck lives 99% of the time. On the few occasions I towed with it, I used 89. That being said, my Hemi dropped a piston 700 miles from home this past summer. Praise the Lord, it did get me home, where I then took it to the dealer. It was 4K out of warranty and the dealer would not do anything, nor would the zone rep, nor Chrysler. I called the 800 number and got all kinds of promises, but in the end they wouldn't do anything. I let that particular dealership do all my customer pay and warranty work on 2 vehicles. I also buy a lot of parts through the parts dept. No offers to split the cost of repair, nor help with trade-in on another truck(they knew I was looking for a diesel). Nothing, just pay us to fix it. I was and still am very disappointed in the lack of customer service. Well, I took it home and put a used Hemi in it. Upon tearing down the old Hemi, it had suffered from pinging and one of the pistons had a hole in it. I never heard it ping, and I'm very sensitive to that kind of thing. I can only guess that the sensors that were supposed to retard the timing weren't working correctly. Maybe it had been that way since day one and it eventually took it's toll. Maybe it happened all at once. I don't know. I feel it was a mechanical defect that shouldn't have happened and Chrysler should have stood behind it. So, the moral of this story is run the 89 most of the time, or you could end up like me and put an engine in it. That's all I run in the replacement engine. Now my Hemi is NOM!! LOL.

I've always ran 89 in my truck, When I bought it there was a tag hanging from the dash stating to use 89 at a minimum for best performance and to prevent engine damage.
Small price for having a 5.7 I guess, I've heard people complain about it needing 7qts of oil before too.

I drive a 2010 Hemi Ram. Owner's manual recommends 89 octane and that is what I use.
The 2009 and later HEMI has a different HP and TQ rating. Maybe it requires mid grade fuel as a result......?
