Does anyone have a good picture of the mod (location and length/depth required)? What did Hurst do about the reinforcement plate behind the inner fender? If I were to hammer on that I'm not sure that the shock would mount properly?

Thanks in advance!

I'll see if I can find my picture of one of the original '68 SS/A Hemi Darts here in Houston. But, basically it's nothing more than a sledge hammer whacking at the forward section of the shock tower for header clearance.. Sounds grude, but it was and is...

That pic is very accurate. Leaving about 3/4 "moon". I have seen them where they are now cut and finished nicely so as to appear not molested. One thing though, if you are choosing to use larger then stock valve retainers or roller rockers that require the wider valve covers, you may have to take off more (about 1/2 inch more) from the inner fender. I put a motor in what I thought was cut enopugh and had to take back out because it was touching the pass. side fender.

Oh MAN! That's exactly what I was looking for! Thanks so much. Now I need to go find the courage to take a hammer to the inner fender..

primetime is correct - alot of variables come into play.

If your trying to build a accurate clone then it's sledge away.

I wanted to be able to pull my cover in the car with roller rockers and a x-ram without having to lift the motor.

I actually scalloped the inner fender , and moved the shock brace out towards the wheel a bit.

Curious if this mod would benefit 440 A bodies with, say, Pro Parts style headers...

I understand that is a photo of a factory Hurst modification, but I had to go significantly 'deeper' to get the passenger valve cover off w/o issue (see attached). I suggest getting a PAYR plastic block and test fitting.

Thanks so much for saving me grief down the road. I'm more interested in a practical modification than a historically accurate one. I have stage V rockers, so I'm going to do the cutting and welding now vice AFTER I have painted the engine compartment and determined that I don't have adequate clearance. This is a grand departure from my standard operating procedure...

Can anyone answer my question:

Do they modify the inner fender of the Barracuda as well they do in the Super Stock dart? Or they did not because the engine bay of the SS/AH Barracuda was wider?

The engine bays of the 2 cars are identical in size.

And every single one of these cars will be different! You should see mine, and the boss' car...

Sorry, but yes, the Barracuda's got whacked too. I talked to a bunch of the SS racers at Indy one year. The general consensus was that some got "massaged", some got "beaten", and some got smoothed over and even bondo'd depending on which guy did the install.

Yep, they all got trashed by one way or another! I need to take pics of both cars, maybe if I get home one of these days...
