Ok guys, I have been offered a possible sponsorship. But they want to use a small block. So aside from them paying to reconfigure my Duster they want to run a R5P7. For now it will be a local bracket thing and maybe some Classic races if the car fits. What are the pros and cons of the engine? Are they worth the money? Do They hold up? What changes are needed to make it a good roundy round motor to a drag motor? Also should I worry about spare part availablity? Should I have them get spares now instead of waiting? I know a couple guys have used or are using them. Can you all give me some pros and cons. Thanks

Member Scottb ( a good friend here locally) put this combo in a 68 dart.
He fabricated his own front end to work, and used off the shelf 2 inch w2 headers he made adapter plates for, seem to work real well.
Had no problems with under hood room/clearance for anything.
He uses an adapter plate Bondo Bob offers that works great with his 904 transmission. Scottb had his 8 inch convertor adjusted by PTC to work with his motor and it has netted 1.28xx 60 foot times thus far and has been in the 9.40's at 142ish at 3000 pounds.I should note the motor he is using is actually a restrictor plate motor, and he uses the cam that was installed for that application. Its ONLY 248@ 50, so in spite of the dinky cam, still using the belt driven water pump setup, etc, you can see the numbers even a very " tame" setup of this sort makes with very little tuning. He is running a pro systems 1000 hp 4150 style carb.
The heads just make such great power that anything under them still results in mind boggling performance. I suspect if he changed the piston/ cam combination to net more compression( currently barely 12-1) and had a cam designed to better take advantage of the heads in a drag race environment, along with driving the water pump with an electric unit, the combo could threaten the 8's in good air.
69 Dart GTS A4 Silver All steel, flat factory hood, 3360race weight 418 BPE factory replacement headed stroker, 565 lift solid cam Best so far, 10.40 @127 1/4 1.41 best 60 foot 6.60 at 103.90 1/8

Another thing I forgot to mention, If you can find some sets of new old pistons from around 2000 or so, will probably be Petty Enterprises stuff they have the thick rings, as most of the newer stuff runs rings that are around .026-.030 very pricey around the $1200-1500 for a set and they will wear out much quicker than the thick rings Not sure how you're looking to do this build. The other thing is alot of the Petty stuff has .927 pins. The good thing is it's a common pin size. The bad thing is the cranks with 2.000 journals are drying up fast. The Honda(1.880) and IRL(1.850) journals are flooding the market, with that being said I have never seenor heard of any rods with a 927 pin and small journals. Maybe you'd be better off buying a bunch of EEI's old engines and running them til they puke??? Not sure what kind of money sponsorship you're talking here...

You will need to chop up the stock Kframe for starters, or go with an aftermarket tube frame with front steer.
You will have to build your own headers, no one makes any that fit our cars.
To use anything other than a Richmond transmission, you will need an adapter plate.
You will need to find enough room under the hood to stuff a 2 gallon oil tank.
Just a few I can think of.....
Thanks for the info. I have been busy working my end.
The motor is a Nationwide motor so an open motor, already has a roller cam in it.
I have seen the adaptor plate and that is the route i am going with it as I will use my 727. The convertor will need a tweek but that is not an issues.
It is going into a tube car, so no issues with front end clearance, nor hood clearance. It will all fit. May have to re-arrange the rad unless I can get the stuff to use my remote water pump. That I will see about. I can live without having it.
I am also going to see how it runs on E-85. I have 2 good carbs, one is already set up for e-85 the other is a pro-systems 4150 HP carb.
I am waiting on my chassis guy to see what the header and engine placement is going to cost.
Thanks again guys and if you can think of anything else please post it here.
As for the money, well it is a good deal that is as far as I want to go on that now until I get money in hand.

Not sure if Bob's adapter plate works for a 727...might want to Pm him and ask

Just cause you're in MI doesn't mean you can't swing over here on the Ferry and race our 660 on ice I guess the ferry might be closed in the winter you'll have to drive...
Yes those are my adapters on ebay... Cheap worldwide advertising

No problem. I am hoping I do. I am in the guard so only short trips, nothing like our full time military guys. I am usually in the rear with the gear. The combat boys are the rear troopers and warriors. I just support the motto, can't kick azz with out my tanker gas.... Love doing it so.. Besides this is supposed to be an easy trip. Turkey in 09 was to be easy too. But that turned into a goat rope.
