For all you Paint and Body guys.. Its time to paint the new hot rod and the body shop that it will be going to, is under contract with Dupont paint.. so I have a couple of questions for ya..
1) Is Dupont hard enough to survive the race track? That includes the fiberglass hood, front end and trunk lid.. The paint on my 73 scratches so easily.. all you have to do is hold a screwdriver tip a foot away and its scratched.. So I would like a hard paint that will hold up to the typical bumps, knicks and scratches
2) I havent decided on the final color yet, but am leaning towards silver, orange or lime green... is there any pro's or con's to these colors..?
3) Will there be a difference in color when applied to the steel body vs the fiberglass parts? I remember the two tone look of the GM's a few years back when they had the plastic bumper covers..
4) Is there a website that shows paint samples for the Dupont paint?
Lastly, for those that are curious.. its a tubbed 70 Duster.. and feel free to offer any other suggestions or advise..
Thanks in advance

Why not use a clear coat so it doesnt scratch as easy and if you get a scratch you can wheel it out pretty easy... you shouldnt see any color difference in the metal or glass because it should be sealed before paint

I painted my car in 1981 with DuPont CENTARI acrylic enamel. It's got a few nicks here and there, but it has held up very well and still has a nice gloss after 30 years.
2) I havent decided on the final color yet, but am leaning towards silver, orange or lime green... is there any pro's or con's to these colors..?
Orange and red are more expensive paint
3) Will there be a difference in color when applied to the steel body vs the fiberglass parts? I remember the two tone look of the GM's a few years back when they had the plastic bumper covers..
No,my car has a fiberglass hood and the basic prep is the same as if it were steel. The color is the same also.
4) Is there a website that shows paint samples for the Dupont paint? The DuPont site has their own "Hot Hues" which is similar to House Of Kolor paint. You can also go to a paint store and look at a color chip book.
Lastly, for those that are curious.. its a tubbed 70 Duster.. and feel free to offer any other suggestions or advise..

Don, DuPont 2 stage is just as tough as any OEM paint. You can go with their Urathane clear which is the most durable. Since your buddy is an auto body guy he'll know exactly how to formulate the clear. If not done right the clear can be brittle....or too soft...one scratches...the other fractures and flakes off. Red and Orange are expensive...but both hide body flaws well.... And if your doing Lime Green....be careful of metallics...they are tricky in the line colors. if everything is primered....then sealed it will be the same color all over. the whole car needs to be primed and sealed at the same time. If not they can gas out at different rates and cause minor color shift. make sure he uses sealer closest to the color you choose. Lime Green....go white sealer....dark colors...dark sealers. My buddy has been laying down paint since the early 90's....and we use nothing but DuPont and House of Colors on my stuff. As far as color samples.....your buddy should have a CHIT book if he has the DuPont mixing system....we just paint my boys Junior the new Honda Accord midnight black...it actually has blue pearl and blue mica flake....turned out awesome in the sun.

My car was painted with Dupont and worked well, proper prep is the best thing to do.

PPG BASE / CLEAR .....
PS: proper prep-work makes all the difference.

PPG's DBU basecoat is the best and easyest system to use but with the EPA you cant get it especially here in California. Now with having to use HVLP Guns and compliant materials were stuck using not so user friendly paints unless you have a nice heated well lit downdraft booth. I painted my Dart with Dupont Cromax because it was given to me but Hard to get to cover and mettalics you have to realy finnesse while spraying. Iv'e sprayed a couple cars with Duponts Cromax Water base and I struggled on both cars. Silver is definatly hard with waterborne, all conditions need to be perfect. Dupont's Elete Basecoat is very durrable, Most Big Rig trucks use it from the factory but again you need a good booth for it to come out nice without major cutting and pollishing. If i had my choice I would use PPG's DBU Basecoat system but you need to check to see if you can get it in your area.
I still use DBU everyday.I love it.I've used everthing under the sun.I think the time is coming for me to give it up with all the water bullChit,LOL

i have been in and around the autobody business my whole life, the past ten years i have been working at a major autobody paint supplier, We sell many brands of paint including Dupont. Dupont is good, as 8secdart stated, yes the coverage is not that good, but still a quality paint. What makes paint chip easily is poor surface prep or too thick of a film build. that said, engine comp and jambs should be prepped very well and minimal film build in these areas to insure good resistance to chipping

Don my car is Dupont paint, Hot hues to be exact lots of nice shades IMO. Been on there for almost 6 years now. You have seen it in up close and in person so you decide if it will hold up.. One other thing that we have to deal with here is Compliant materials. Stuff you guys spray in most of the country and even a lot of California is not the same stuff we are allowed to use in the Bay Area. Just something that needs to be kept in mind. Don wish we could have painted it for you but you know the deal. We did just get a truck done in Dupont a white pearl. Painted it last Saturday and came out great. Now if I can just get the other cars out of the shop before we move
