I'm buidling a 408(360)stroker with Edelbrock Alum. heads I have a .508 hyd cam for the motor now but was thinking about putting a .557 solid lift cam instead. The motor is going down in a 71 Demon that is basically going to be driven on the street only taken to the strip to see what it can run. Good idea or bad idea?

Thanks Brian

depends on the rest of the combo, if you have a good converter and gears to match nothing wrong with it imo.

Leigh, member of this board ran it in a bracket race 360 for many years in his 69 dart. Went mid elevens. If he's on line I bet he will post all his motor stats for you.

If it's not a roller I won't use it. I'm sure I'll get a lot of disagreement.

Went 10.79 with that cam in my uncles 408. Had indybrock unported heads and a air gap with a 750 on it. 10.3 comp. Worked great. He built it for a 4 spd duster for the street. We stuffed it into my street strip car while I was building a new motor for it. It weighed 3250

The .557" MP cam will be a kitten in a 408/416. It is actually smaller than what I ran in my pump gas 10.25:1 416". I ran an Ultradyne ft solid, 259/263@.050 .590" lift 110LSA, and it idled (choppy)at 800, shift at 6,000 although it would rev 7K+. You won't neeed more than a 3000stall with this cam in a stroker, where a 360 might need almost 4000 and a 340 maybe more. Mine ran low 11s, 119mph with 3.91 gears, 89octane... RB

^ I agree that the 557 will be pretty tame in a 408. I'm currently running that cam (and loving it) in my street/strip 360. Has good street manners but with enough lope to let you know it's there. My best ET is in my sig line.

Not sure how much umph you're after with your setup, but IMHO the 557 will be on the small side of "serious".

I had someone PM told me to try A D.C. .590 instead of a .557, do you guys think that would be to big for basically a street car?

In my opinion, a MP .590" cam is too radical and has too tight of a lobe separation (LSA) to be ideal in your setup. The .557" is close on the LSA but too small, I think you just ought to investigate a wider LSA (110-112deg.) for your stroker. I had a 110 with aggressive (short seat duration) lobes and mine was real forgiving. Maybe get with Lunati, CompCams, Engle or Bullet/Ultradyne and see what they recommend. I know people are gonna argue with this, but if you really intend to street drive this, even a big cam with a wider LSA is going to be more friendly... RB
