ok went out the visit my buddy thats going to build the 572 and would like to know just at what point is the billet crank a must?????

also i got to see his new ride a yellow and black road runner thats perfect ..airgrabber hood that works inside is better then any new car i have seen oh yea its got a six pack....man what a nice ride...im not a b body guy but thats a nice ride..wish i could learn to post pic of my phone cause i took a few not the best shots but they work..anyway thanks mike

when your planning above 1500 hp i'd look at billet cranks.

hey Dan he's only looking a 1000 or so not 1500 the plan is to put it in a full chasiss car (2000 something 2 door stratus) thats a the shop now getting work done to it...also a ford 9" rear... he would like to go in the 4's 1/8 mile but be able to make the 1/4 aswell..i dont know if he has got in touch with the builders on the board that i gave him info on but he said he will be makeing alot of calls and alot of ???????? thanks mike

also i might add i got to look at his new world block ..man those things are nice..he said he had to run key way lifters they sould exspensive....but when you make hp you must make money lol

I have a forged Callies Magnum and I make "OK " power. Two years and the crank looks new and checks out.

1000Hp billet crank buyers are nothing but goldfish . I would not worry about a crank shaft , the power limiter is the World block.

No way does he need a billet crank. Hell, people make 1000hp with Eagle cranks all the time and they seem to last ok. A Callies Magnum is a kick a$$ crank and will be more than enough for his hp level.

A billet crank is only a must when you cannot get a forging in what you need.


Career best 8.02 @ 169 at 3050# and 10" tires small block power.

So a crank that's machined and bal. Correct along with good machine work on the rest of the build will work. He's willing to buy the billet but would rather spend on other stuff that's needed.thanks mike

x3 - for reference, Al Hoffman ran forged cranks in his flopper, If he'd put one between his legs at over 5000hp, I think you'll be OK.

I got 2 billet cranks for only 1 reason... the price
was right... both are SB 3.79 cranks

A cast crank is fine for many HP applications----but has definite limits. Why? Because they can't handle the flex under most higher HP race conditions. Forged cranks are much better for high HP use because they can handle crank flex but they too have limits depending on material, heat treating, etc. For about 99.9% of drag race applications, a good forged crank is fine. There are applications where a billet crank is necessary. For example:
Very high HP oval track use where the engine is used as a brake.

Very high RPMs-----above 9000RPM.

Where very light crank weight is desired---like 36 lb. stroker small block cranks or 42 lb. BB cranks.

I'm sure there are other applications---my mind is just blank right now.

I make over 2000hp at the crank in my Camaro (I know this is a mopar site) and I run a Callies Magnum crank.. It's just a 4340 forging...

Eagle makes a forged 4340 crankshaft for around $895. Callies, Crower, Winberg all sell forged units from $2100-$2800. Billet crankshafts start around $3500 and are usually heavy, 70-80#'s.

Only a hundred runs or so and my megablock shows cap walk at about 880 hp, and the block flex's in the valley badly not letting intake gaskets stay in place past ten runs or less! Hope the World blocks are better!
