Did all of the PS Hemis use a compacted graphite block? What should I look for when buying one? Are parts such as blocks and heads readily available? Where besides RJ to look for one?

Thanks,
Mike Gray

I might be wrong but, I believe that the 5-cam bearing blocks were not cp and the nine bearing blocks were. When buying heads you must be careful about buying heads that are either cracked or that are running the smaller 10mm spark plugs becuase they are limited on heat ranges (especially if you are going to be using a power adder).Hope this helps, if you are needing some parts I have some for sale that are in excellent condition! Brand new 5-cam bearing block with 14mm plug heades and matching intake. Also have crank, rods , pistons. 2 cams, .937 lifters, rocker arms , and valve covers. I purchased everything from Dave Nickens with plans on running boost with this combo (block, heads, and in take). Make me an offer, these parts must go!

Mike,Allen Johnson sales used parts ,my engine was gotten from him thur Midway Performance Warehouse. They have lots of these parts from various mopar teams. There any lots of parts out there ,just have to be careful about the stuff bein cracked and worn out.If you go thur Allen on parts you would do good, the parts are what they say they are.An they can answer any question better than any of us on the parts.

Thanks for the replies.

Jimmy, I know Matt Hensley who works for Allen Johnson.

I've always been a small block guy, just trying to educate myself on a possible B1-PSO, Predator or Hemi combo in the future.

Believe me ,I wish I had just done a BAE engine instead of this engine ,but I' m so far into this engine now.Dean has a great thing going with the turbo predator engine ,what scares me about this engine is if its a turd ,how but money I have in this one of one engine I have created,I hope it works out for me,hope to have it all finished by end of summer and on the track testing for the October ORTC race. And I wish I had the extra coin right now for your small block turbo engine to go in a pro street sst ram I'm doing for some street riding. But if it it was me starting fresh Hemi--BAE ,wedge---Predator hands down!good luck.

If your class allows a BAE motor, i agree that would be best. But,imo, your talking apples and oranges...and maybe grapes...lol. The PS hemi will produce the most natual aspirated horsepower of any mopar engine. IF the Predator was stretched to a 4.9 bore space it might come close, i.e., used bigger valves. If you really want to run with the big boys you need the PS Hemi99.

If you are doing an N/A motor, than the PS Hemi is the best Mopar engine available. If you are going to be a doing a turbo deal, the BAE route is the only way to go.

Parts are out there for the PS stuff, but, you have to be VERY careful who you are dealing with. The heads must have the 4 bolt stands, or you will be in "Valvetrain Hell" with the old 2 bolt stuff. I must say, almost 10K RPM on a 10.5 tire is kinda fun.

You mean like these? I thought that they ran this style until the 2006 revisions? If so, a whole lotta laps were made this way for 6 seasons. I know they ribbed the head more, changed the stands and canted the valves with the new heads. If mine doesn't move soon I'm going to assemble it and make some pulls so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Get-X - Yes the 2 bolt stuff had a bunch of issues with "Flexing". I have the very last set of heads that Jeg Coughlin was going to use, and, although they are the most current casting, they still require constant maintenance, but, than again, ANY motor that is revving to the moon, must have a consistent, and hopefully, stable valvetrain.

I had heard that they had a lot of stability problems with the five cam bearing block which is why I held out for the nine bearing block. That change was supposed to have done away with a lot of shaft flex with the big springs that lead to a lot of the valvetrain issues they had.

No doubt the extra ribbing in the new head helped as well. I'm assuming they went to four bolt stands to broaden the frootprint and provide more surface area in which to spread out the load and help limit the movement.

No guts no glory Fred! Well, I already took the plunge so I guess since I have it all I might as well assemble it and have some fun if I don't sell it. I even thought about turbo charging it but don't think it's the right engine for that. Wish me luck!

the 5 cam bearing deal is good to about 9,800/10,000
over that is where they saw the cams go into the jump rope deal on the spin trons and did the 9 cam bearing blocks
Roy told me that they arent bad on valve trian parts if you only crank it 9,500, its 10,000 and above is when they start eating valve springs every 5 passes my heads are like Marcs with the same stand setup with W/W rockers

also the springs are so much better now with PACs double spring vs the triples that can handle over a inch lift

Just curious, what is and the purpose of the "irregularity" that I have circled. I noticed it on the back side of the bore also...

Thanks

So what material are the blocks made from? cast, compacted graphite or aluminum?

Thanks again to all that have posted.

They are made of a premium-grade iron cast in England but, not CG.
