Soooo ..

I have this little Valiant wagon, I want it to be a semi-budget build and a drive to the track most often kind of thing ( thats the idea anyway)

I live awful close to the track and loading up the Belvedere to go 15 miles is a PITA

My closest /current race buddy has a fast S-10 truck that he gives me little to no heads up he is heading to the track for TNT and, well ..

I just go over and watch instead of fighting to load the car ( should buy another open trailer to ease the loading operation)

And, locally here , we have these vintage races where they do not allow anything with "BLING" to participate .. frankly, the tracks they run them at are well ---> short !

The car

Idea #1

would be a sleeper, just fix the basic flaws in the body and clean it up good

small block, 60% street / 40% strip kind of thing, its a short drive 15 miles to the local track

Make it nice enough to be cool / fun but, budget build

Idea #2

would be to (re)-create a car that to my knowledge never existed but, they ran Chebbies and Furd

How do you tell the difference between

Your girlfriend
Your wife

A hooker ?

Girlfriend says , are you done already ?

A hooker says, are you not done yet ?

And a wife says

Beige, I think I'll paint the ceiling beige

I'm seeing a Magnum JY 360 built to 380 HP specs,904,83/4 with 3.73-3.91's (or a 81/4 -cheaper)and paint it white, leave the dog dishes on it and go have fun with it.Should be an easy 12 second car that will run pump swill with no problem.

A B motor fits in there easier than a small block. Trans fits on the original ctossmember. (built a 62 Lancer) The Golden Lancer Drove it on the street and it ran 10:40 all day long nothing special . was a 470 with a set of sr heads and a small roller in it with 4:30 gear and 727 Should of kept it Its in Carlsbad Calif. now

So, you are saying a B engine is smaller than a LA ?

I'm diggin idea #1. Keep steel wheels on it and the flat hood. Ive always thought it would be cool to have a fast wagon sleeper like that. And i would do it with a stroker small block so u could tell people...."Its just a 318"! But thats just me....

Yours is a little newer but AJ installed a V12 Allison back in the day, you have to at least equal or top that.

The bling-free idea works for me: steelies, looking as stock & unassuming as it can and still run your target ET/MPH.
I'd lean towards a stroker SB, 904, not too much gear, cleaned up enough to be presentable but as original/unrestored as practical, subframe ties and put some brakes on it for that short top-end.
You could letter it with a sponsor: BigDad's Bikini Bar...Bigdad's Tople$$ Club...the driver's name could be "Daffy Duck"...maybe even his likeness on the tailgate...ah, but I digress...:)

I have two fairly cool names for the car if I lettered it in mind

And a creative driver name already too

He's up my way here

How quick do you need to be to slip past your buddies
S-10.... will you need a roll bar or chassis...
start from that point... then determine what you
will need for a engine...for a trans I'm going with
a 518 OD but without the lock up and using one of
my race 8" converters... that way I get get the revs
down on the road but still have a launch

I can't catch the S-10

Its a SBC 434 with a 300 shot

Runs 5.80's

But, I hate going to the track by myself so I only like to go when someone else is there

Ask him to turn the bottle off then you guys can run...
I myself am building to go 10.2 - 10.3 and drive it
on the road... whats the weight on that... I use to
have one back when I was in school(was a /6 but I
put a 273 in it) but I dont recall the weight... I
want to say 3000

Bingo, looked for it could not find it

But, two things

It destroys the sleeper idea
and driving it to and from the track

well ...

The idea is to drive it there, not all the time but some of the time

So, I'm torn
I'd love to make a tribute car

Go tribute way but maybe kinda in the way of the fast guys. Stock looking small block maybe even with a set of 273 finned valve covers. motor painted red. ten inch tires on steelies. gotta be white though. forget the gas bottle too.

Go small block turbo, all he will see is your
tail lights

For a 11.50 and up ride, I would go with frame connectors, ladder bars to make full use of stock wheel wells. Will have to set the rear axle back about 3/4 inch.
Front would get a home made rack and pinion, coil over/spring combo with pass side shock tower layed over to fit TTI 67 up bb a body under chassis headers. I don't know if going with the rack and dumping the torsion bars give enough room for the headers, but plan to find out in the future. Those two moves open up a ton of space combined with a little shock tower surgery. The plan would be minimal shock tower move to keep the stock appearance theme as much as possible. Motor would be a 512 BB low deck, Indy dual plane with a juice cam and eddy heads. If you go conservative on the cam, it should stay in the mid elevens and idle like a kitten. Want more? Roll bar, head porting , looser converter and a big flat tappet and you are running 10.s Want 9.s? dump the dual plane for an x type intake, cage /dominater/roller.
Another route would be a hotter motor, no roll bar but a throttle stop to keep you at 11.50, but a mean mph!

Bigdad from what i have seen of your rides i know the real sleeper deal is out you will make it slick as heck. i personaly leave it looking as close as it does now the look on everyones face when you run it is priceless i would go with a small block block with a single 76 mm turbo with a 518 trans with a brake you can be creative in hideing a cage if its needed you can always make it look good when the sleeper thing gets old it would look good silver with red insides

There used to be one of those at Lebanon Valley that raced in super pro. Guy had a big hemi in it and he sat in the backseat! Man it was ugly, but it was FAST!! Let me see if I can dig up a pic of that thing. It was in a magazine a while back, some sort of famous racecar or something... Blue and Silver

maybe a new hemi with turbo and a 518 trans, I guess the motor could be close to stock and still make a LOT of power, but I don t know anything about these motors, just what I ve seen here... and I really like your car

What the........Who took the........You don't need advice on the grocery getter. You need to do something about the crime problem in your neighborhood first. Someone has stolen all the trees. Git y'all a trailer and git up here to Oregone and we'll git ya some trees to take home. We're given em all away to China and Japan, so you Texicans may as well git you some.

Keep it the sleaper look for stealth mode. Put in a moderate stroker smallblock making it run high 10's / low 11's.

Just make sure you install a towbar to bring you real racecar to the track
