A bodies a used shorter trans and the factory didn't make 18spline A-body transmissions. (Hemi Hurst Barracuda's not included)

Didnt the Early A (64-65)833 4 sp trans have the 18 spline input? Thought I read the same box was in the 64 Barracuda as was the box in the hemi model.

the only output shaft that changes are the old short shaft A-body 833 trany that uses the small spline count output shaft like a 904 auto trany but the rest uses the same 30 spline 727 style one and newer short tailshaft A-body 833 also uses the 30 spline 727 style!

No this is not true , all the iron case 833 I have had were all 30 spline , only 904 sized A body trans I have seen is the alum OD case trans .

John-
66-7 A body trans was 26 spline (904) output except the 67 383 cars.

I am not saying that beyond a shadow of a doubt I am right but I have never heard of this. After reviwing, a Chrysler transmission was used in 64 and a borg warner in 63's. But I have not found a answer as to the spline size. If Wayne or Jamie chimes in it would be a definate answer.

I have heard two different stories on the Hemi S/S Barracuda's made by Hurst. 1. They used Hemi B body Transmissions and 2. Hurst specially built 18 spline A bodies for them. Which is true I don't know.

Didn't know that , thanks for that correction.

Some years ago i converted a b body 18 spline to a abody 18 spline. Used a 23 spline output shaft and tailshaft. Used a 307 bearing and retainer to fit in the lakewood bell i was using. The problem was the 307 bearing had a chamfer on the o.d. of the inner race that let the bushed 18 spline gear slide forward till it hit the input shaft. The 308 bearing does not have this chamfer and the gear end play is taken up by the inner race. I cured this by going thru the bearing suppliers stock till we found a 307 bearing without the chamfer. It worked just fine. Lots of street miles then i raced it for a year. I sold that whole setup trans, Mccleod dual disk and lakewood bell at the Mopar Nats at Indy years ago. Explained to the guy Exactly what i had done and he was back the next year happy as heck with it. One less b body 18 spline but we all did things like this back in the day.

thanks for your post edssart.
I have a b-body 18 spline and I want to build a A-body 18 spline for my barracuda.

I was hoping with Jamie's new trans coming out that people will start getting off there original parts.

All you need is a 23 spline A body trans to make the swap .

The 18 spline market bottom falling out isn't going to happen with the release of the new Passon 5 speed.

why don't you just use the long tail shaft trans (18 spline) in the a-body and use the 727 drive shaft? that way you're not butchering anything and can always change it back at a later date.probably get all your money back too.

Then you have to rig up something so the shifter comes out in the right place, my car is a 4 speed already so I have no need to change the driveshaft. I just had to find a good a body mainshaft , I have 2 B body hemi trans with a broken ear on the case so I bought a Passon Aluminum case and tail.
