Both parts are in a set... otherwise if it was only a side it would ask LEFT or RIGHT(they are different EDIT its real easy to make them from 2 X 3 tubing and a set of dividers and a band saw(I make my own)

Not to hijack your thread, but when you weld these in do you have to do it in a jig? I've heard it warps the housing?
In my opinion that would be the best way I've weld a couple with the weld a " method and switch to prevent warpage and to seem not to get around it.

So if I'm reading this correctly you stitch welded an inch at a time and alternated areas? And it still warped the housing?

That's correct.and always seems to have to cut the ends off and re weld the backing plates in a jig

Yes, but first keep in mind a jig is mainly for ease of welding and to verify proper alignment, no jig will prevent by itself warping. And if it warps a reasonable amount, first fix is to cut off housing ends, realign, and then reweld carefully.
Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Anyone have pics of how they jig up an 8 3/4?
I used a 10" I-beam about six feet long and a piece of 3/4"x 3"x 6' flat bar to make my fixture. I took the flat bar and set it on top of the I-beam and welded it so it was 3" high, then I set the housing face down, you will have to notch it common to the gasket surface. Next you need to clamp it to the fixture then tack it in several places, now remove your clamps and get your back brace, fit it, tack it, and weld it, no need to stitch it ,just let it cool in the fixture before you remove it, it wont pull if you do it this way

The fixture I made works really well and prevents any warping at all. I have seen housings that were warped, the axles wont go in straight because the bearing dosent line up with the housing, not the case with this method. The I-beam and flat bar are really heavy duty and dont see any heat, so no fixture warpage.

Most people don't have a jig. I didn't when I did my brothers. I did and inch or 2 at a time and moved around. No warpage at all.

I have done more than a few, if the axels are in they kind of act like a jig imo. I fully let the small welds cool before doing more. they may not be perfect if they were put on a jig but they have never caused any problems.
