My 69 RR is making a clunk noise that is coming from the rear of the car. The noise is heard when the clutch is released in 1st or reverse from a dead stop. As you release the clutch you hear a clunk then as the car starts to roll the noise goes away. Threw all the gears the nosie is not heard. There is no wine from the rear end while driving. The driveshaft has new u joints and the tranny has a fresh complete rebuild. The rear end is an 8 3/4 with a 3.55. Sounds like when the driveshaft is engaged the noise is heard. Any help would be great. A clunk noise is also heard when making sharp turns at very low speeds. Not sure if its coming from the front or rear.

my suggestion would be to jack up the 8&3/4 in the center to get the tires off the ground ,put the trans in neutral & grab a tire & move it forward & backward slightly & see how much backlash you have beween the ring gear & the pinion. EDIT & check the axle endplay while you're there.

RapidRobert, Thanks for the info. How much backlash and axle end play should I have.

You're welcome bro. I have the same clunk in mine & with it up in the air as described I can move a tire ALOT forward & backward before there is contact. I believe .005" to .020" is the spec for end play but I would check the archives & I believe you want it on the low side like maybe .010" with the wheels off & a dial indicator on a flange but I would be leaning far more toward backlash as the culprit here but too much endplay may be contributing to it.

Id check the U joints first. That is usually the clunk from the driveline.Just remember some dont have slop they get rusty and the needle bearings inside disappear.I have to change mine just about every year. The 4 speed and 600 horse are tough on them.Rocky
