2 things.. first off make sure your getting a set of heads (2) they play this game all the time.. next. those heads had a high dealer price but rarely sold for that value.. if you can get them in the 600 dollar range then its a good deal.. i think i paid $800 shipped when these where new..this was a discount right from the dealers parts counter guy at the time. fwiw.. the heads are ok...so so..

i agree with that statement. the pot luck on haveing to spend money to fix them only works in your favor if you get a good deal.. id rank them just above iron heads.. cheapst.

I have worked with 2 sets, one said Zeus and one did not, the zeus one was nice casting quality as far as texture porosity and core shift, the other one looked terible and the guides were not centered in the port and you could see bubbles in the aluminum(it did not cause any running problems once installed). The ports are very small and funky shaped at the entrance, the new guides they put in are loose and needed to be replaced on both sets. After everything was sorted out they were nice but they needed porting and machine work to be any better than a magnum or 308.

$1746 for BARE heads & you get sloppy 3/8" guides & who knows whatever else piss poor machine work they have (depends on when it was made). You can see by the above replies lots of people have had issues with their machining quality... I dunno why anyone would consider them unless they were given to them or you could get them for $300-$400 or something. Buy a set of Edelbrocks you'll be $1000+ ahead in the end & have a better performing piece.

OK, Thanks Ryan..I guess another case of overpriced/bad QC from MP. Looks like the Eddies are the best bang for the buck. I dont mind paying extra if the product deserves it...guess theres just no hope for the Commando head, it loses on all accounts. OK, here is something else I need opinions on. Since i cant use the Commando head, I am planning to go with a 5.7 magnum motor, is this the way to go? I like that its a roller cam motor and I understand the heads are better. Are there any other advantages over the old LA motor??

Yeah, definitely turn a 180 and run on those Cammandos. I really don't see much good about them anyway, except maybe the chamber is a good starting point. One of our customers running one of our short blocks under a set of those. The spring pockets were off center, bad casting etc. Flowed TERRIBLE even when ported nicely. My old J heads blew them out of the water everywhere on the bench. Also they were very peaky on the dyno. The engine they went on was a twin short block to my 434ci. The cammandos made 15hp more than my J's at the peak, but was down everywhere else. My J engine was 10.8:1 compression, the cammando engine is 12.4:1. Then we go to the track. My j engine ran out of gear in the 1/4. However the j engine was quicker and faster in the 1/8 by a little ( can't remember exact now) and my car is 450lbs heavier. So, I guess it shows that the cammando can't even hold its own against a stock casting head. Go for the eddies and call it a day. -Kenny

5.7 is a hemi...do you mean a 5.2 (318) or 5.9 (360) magnum?
no disadvantages to the magnum over the LA other than you may have to mod you alternator bracket, and unless you redrill the heads to LA pattern, there's limited choices for intakes.
another advantage, since they use pedestal or stud mount rockers, aftermarket roller rockers are cheaper.
if looking at aftermarket aluminum heads, I've heard OOTB the eddie magnums are better flow wise than the LA eddies, plus they have a smaller chamber for more compression.

We just dynoed a la 318 we built using eddy heads. It had KB pistons, a small Comp hydraulic roller made for injected engines (like 212 and 216 @ .050), stock stroke crank, 1 3/4" headers and a Eddy single plane made for carburetion that had injector bosses and rail mounts welded on for injection. We started it up for the first time and broke it in a bit with a 750 QF dyno carb (smallest we had), then made a few easy pulls. It made 330 hp and 365 ft ibs of torque at 5000 rpms! That was with zero carb tuning, and just leaving the timing at 32* total as the focus for the engine was the injection. We then removed the carb, put the OE 318 magnum throttle body on, wired up the injection and hooked up a high pressure injection pump (that was a party, I'll see if I can post pictures of that mess ). After having to change all of the injectors the customer supplied with our own because everyone one of his "remanufactured" injectors were stuck closed we finally got to pull it with the injection. It made 352 hp and 365 tq at 5500 rpm. This was using a non adjustable MP performance SBEC. The point of all of this is how impresive the unported Eddy heads were on a low compression, tiny cammed, stock stroke 318. I wouldn't even consider using the Commando heads with the Eddys being available and being a proven winner. Just my

Meant to say 5.9, my bad. Wonder if I should go with the new magnum type motor after reading your comments in the "magnum is in" thread. Do guys use these motors that much in older muscle cars? I need to get me some books on small blocks...always beem a big block guy!

I've got magnum heads on the original roller short block from my '86 5th ave. reground the roller cam to an aggressively mild lobe (259 adv, 208@.050, 127@.2, .316" lobe lift), pulls my 3900 lb 5th ave with authorita' others have put essentially stock magnum 318 & 360's with a 4bbl and cam/spring change (to something smaller than 224@.050) into A bodies and been in the mid 12's to mid 13's...

Sounds good, patrick, think I will stick with the plan. Got a line on on a 360 magnum out of a truck. The car will be a 65 B'cuda and they only weigh 2900 lbs...so, heck, it might put me in the 11s...lol and still get excellent mpg.
