I've been contimplating changing out my Dynamic 9.5"...4500 flash converter,to a 8" 5000-5500 unit. My 440's peak torque is currently 5200 rpm. I only put about 400-500 miles on the GTX during the season...May to October. I've heard both positive..and negative opinions in the past. I'd really like to lower my 1.54-1.58 60' times! Thanks in advance for your opinions! Randy B.

Randy you could have your loosened up some but for
what you do with the car I think you would be wasting
your money with the new converter... JMO

Thanks guys! Maybe I worded my post incorrectly! I want opinions on using a "looser" 8" race-type unit on the street..without a lot of heat build-up...and slippage! Manufacturers are helpful too! THANKS! If possible,I'm going to do my best to find a used unit in good shape! I AM on a BUDGET!!! Keep your eyes..and ears open for me!

I would not run an 8" on the street. For a guy on a tight budget, you seem to desire a lot of high dollar stuff.

a 9" J will be looser than what your running and work good on the street (thats what i run in the dart). my buddy runs a ultimate 8" on the street with no issues. 8" seems a little overkill on a 10/11 sec street/strip car though.

Charley...thanks for pointing out that OBVIOUS fact of DESIRING a lot of "high dollar stuff"! One can only HOPE to scrape up the money for car parts in a lot of cases!Simply because I'm seeking opinions, doesn't necessarily mean I'll be able to afford to get it..but,it's a possibility in the future!

I run a 9.5" Dynamic that flashes to approx. 4500 and my 3755# 440 Challenger pulls 1.45-1.46 60-fts. Ever consider that the reason your car 60-fts almost a tenth slower than mine isn't the converter?

Can Jim (440jim) or Mr P Body,,post the equation for 60' and ET....it is pretty close,,,cant remember the formula..

That might give an indication of "how far off" the 60' is, if at all for your ET...

This using the Wallace calculator ... the difference
in the 60' is 1.57 in the 1/4... in other words for
every .1 in 60 you X that by 1.57 for the 1/4

60 Foot 1.56
330 Foot 4.49
660 Foot 7.06
660 MPH 96.27
1000 Foot 9.29
1/4 Mile ET 11.19
1/4 Mile MPH 118.41

Mike...looks like ALL the incrementals you listed from Wallace fall in line with what I was running in the past. I've heard from more than a few people running an 8" converter on the street with NO PROBLEMS. I'm in the opinion that if I get a flash speed right at..or close to the current max torque at 5200rpm,it'll 60' quicker! I REALLY appreciate all the opinions..and ESPECIALLY appreciate actual experience of you guys who switched from a 9.5"-10" to an 8" unit, and drive occasionally on the street! Keep your experiences..and opinions coming,PLEASE! Randy B.

Start w/ jets, squirters, pump cams, a timing light and a log book to record what changes the different tuning settings, launch RPM, shift RPM, tire pressure, etc., make.

At some point you have to settle on a baseline of parts and start flogging the final tune to get the best from it. Sometimes I've stumbled upon some significant gains from major parts swaps, but a lot of the improvements have come from a good bit of track time simply tuning it to work better.

Thanks Brad! I would have done a LOT more tuning at the track last season..but chemo, and a 3-level cervical fusion kinda put a "damper" on that! Next year should be a whole different story...I'm HOPING!

I'm running a "J" in the Dart. Seems fine on the street for the limited driving I do. The biggest improvement in my 60' came from tires. I think there is more to be found in tuning. Brad has some pretty sound advise.
I've been asking around trying to find a guy in our area that does converters. everyone says they have heard of someone but can't remember the name. I will let you know what I find...

Considering how heavy your car is, the et looks pretty good for the mph. If you can afford it, porting the heads would get you where you want .

Thanks Randy,Deaks! Deaks,I was looking to have Jeff@Modern CNC port the heads, but couldn't scrape up the money! Hopefully, down the road,I can do it! Randy,I sent Lenny@ Ultimate a e-mail,to see how much additional stall he can add to the 9.5"! Also..someone on this board is offering me a 8" Coan at a VERY reasonable price! I will be doing a lot of "listening" to OPINIONS,and EXPERIENCES,before doing anything hastilly!

I believe you'll be wasting your money on an 8" converter. Did you ever see where your car stalls now? Just because you put a 4500 stall in the car does not mean your hitting 4500. You need torque to stall the converter.

All this talk about converters, ported heads, roller cams etc.... & nobody's suggested optimizing the chassis. What does the car do now when it launches? Does it look like the car is transferring weight properly? Is it rising properly? Give the old Mopar Chassis manual a read. It does a great job of explaining how a "stock" leaf spring car should launch. Are you using good shocks?? Anything named Chassis Engineering 3 way or equivelent is JUNK!! Is your front end "bound up"? Here's a little test for you....

Jack up the car
Put on jack stands
Remove the torsion bar from the lower control arm
Using your hands, try to raise the tire as far into the fender as possible & let it go. See how fast it drops, I'll be it sticks up in the fender. Most do......

The front end should be loose enuff to allow the suspension to travel quickly, yet tight enuff to maintain good stability. I can tell you how I do this later if you'd like. My opinion is Until you get the chssis working good, all other changes are "band-aids". Just my

Thanks,Steff! CE 3-ways are long gone! Ran Lakewood 90/10's and MP Long Drag Shocks for years,in conjunction with 002/003 Super Stock springs. 2 yrs. ago,I switched to Calvert 90/10's and Rancho 9-ways out back. Made a BIG difference! Front tires leave the ground at launch on a decently prepped track(NOT LAPEER!) For a street/strip car,not sure what other changes I could/should make. Should also mention...front sway bar has been removed, and I have the Race(.840) torsion bars installed. Also..battery is mounted in the trunk.

It's good to see you're not dealing with the typical garbage many try to work with.

There isn't one person in this hobby that doesn't work on a "budget". That word gets thrown around way too much on this web site.

Yeah... we are ALL trying to get the best bang for the buck...

The Wallace calculator seems right on for the 60'

I didnt notice much change when i had my convertor sent out last year, ,,I think it was pretty close anyways,,,but i had the trans out,,,and sent it out to get "re-done"

I did notice some improvement with adjusting the carb shooters, ,,car became much more responsive off the line,,,previously the carb was a bit "soggy",,adjusting the squirters helped....

I also noticed playing with the launch RPM helped

Do you run Caltracs ? ( I know Fran runs them on the "street" )

Any options to take some weight out of that battleship ?

Any options to check the front end travel,,front end limiters,, STEFF makes a great comment on the upper control arms,,and binding, ,,I need to check mine,,i am sure there is some binding going on,,,,eventually I am going to put on some Bondobob front A arms...

see ya in the spring,,,might be a chance for me to drag my car up from Kentucky,,,to race with ya'll at Milan.

Steff, when I see some guys profile's listing 3- 6 HIGH-DOLLAR vehicles...they're definately NOT on a TRUE BUDGET! Not begrudging them at all, just stating the obvious! One man's "budget" is another man's "pipe-dream" But,you're right, the word does get used too frequently around here! In my humbling situation..I'm just THANKFUL to be able to keep my car..let alone, trying to improve it! Doug,I run 002/003 SS Springs with Rancho 9-Ways out back...4:56 gears! Milan in the Spring sounds great!!!

went from ptc 9.5 t0 ptc 8 in and street drives the same other than it was 4 tenths quicker.i guess the car sees the torque increase at the higher stall for more time or something like that
