I have been meaning to make a thread on my wagon project that I can update as I go.

1969 Satellite 6 passenger 383/727 wagon that was converted to a 2 door before I bought it. The previous owner did all the fabrication and the condition as it sits on the trailer is the way I bought it.

Needed a gas tank. The one it came with had a hole in it. No one had a tank for a 69 b body wagon. I took a chance and bought a tank for a 66-67 b body car because it looked the same and it fit perfectly.

old

new

that thing is really cool. whomever fabbed it did a great blend. at a 1st look, I thought the wagon portion had been added to a 2dr car.

Tires and wheels needed to be replaced. Got a set of repop rallys. 15x7 front and 15x8 rear wrapped in Indy 500's. 235/60/15 in front and 295/50/15 out back.

That is definitely a wagon that I would like to turn into a two door hard top just for the fun of a project.

Noooooo....we don't want to go backwards.

That might be harder than making it a 2 door in the first place.

I also replaced the 2.76 open rear with this 3.55 sure grip.

So anyway, I had bought this car in February of this year. With the tank replaced and the front end rebuilt with a kit from PST I took it to a couple local cruise ins.

People seemed to like it, they looked and asked questions etc. Hell...maybe they were horrified by it.

So as the season was winding down I decided that instead of rebuilding the 383, I would replace it with a 440 which I purcased from Rick H (qkRick) here on the forum.

I took a ride out to Ohio and spent the morning BS'ing with Rick. Loaded this motor into my truck and headed home.

Firewall shot before removing ac/heater box.

Scott,

If this forum could show facial expressions, then my mug with a major jaw-drop would display absolute awe for your machine. In my younger days, this would have been the ultimate party / stabbin cabin for the local outdoor theater. Keep rolling on this wonderful project and keep us up to speed. It'd be great to eventually see this machine at a car show.

Wow, thank you Brian. I appreciate the kind words.

Earlier in the week I made a cardboard template for a block off plate for the ac/heat stuff. Then I just cut it out with a cutter and did some light grinding.

I test fitted it and it fit well for what it is.
Here is my buddy, Fat Mike tacking it in.

I ran a poll a while back with 4 colors listed. 2 of the colors were gomango and sassy grass. It was to settle the color argument between my g/f and myself and we both agreed to go with the outcome. Orange (my choice) won hands down, but lately I have been thinking about caving and surprising her with the sassy grass.

The rally green is nice, but I am leaning towards the sassy grass. I just like it better. I am also planning a black bumble bee stripe and black on the hood to break it up a bit. I may go with a six pack hood too. I am undecided.

UPDATE: I just picked up the 727 from Tritak. Contrary to some stories I have heard about him he seems like a nice guy.

I also picked up my headers from http://hypercoat.net/ who coated them for me. They look nice. No photos yet but I will add update pics at the end of the week.

Glad you started a thread on this. I've seen the car in your sig and it's pretty neat. I'm painting my Challenger GoMango and am really happy with the color I had considered sublime for mine so we seem to have a similar thinking. Either way, I don't think you could go wrong.

The wheels and tires made a huge difference. Keep the updates and pics coming!

Sorry for the bad cell phone pic. (EDITED POST to replace with better pic) Here is the ac/heat block off plate with the welds ground down and primed to get an idea of how it will look.

I am probably going to put a heavy ground stud through the plate/firewall to ground the electronics and a strap from the passenger side of the engine to the firewall.

The old (383) and the new ('68 440) sitting in the shop.

I was alone so I had to drag the 440 about 10 feet to the chain hoist so I could get the stand off it and get it set on a pallet with blocks under the motor. I left the chain hoist hooked up with just enough tension on it to make me feel safe.

Here is the motor, Hughes converter and blue 727. Address any complaints about the blue trans to Pete Tritak. He did it and who was I to argue?

Did the old converter trick with the wrench. Worked like a charm.

Working by myself I was able to get it all settled in rather easilly.

I also installed the oil pressure sender for the idiot light. Installed the DB Electrical mini-starter. Put new grade 8 exhaust studs in for the headers and mocked them up. New motor mounts with the old mount brackets off the 383 since they were real nice.

I also took out the remaining heater fitting using the bolt and mongo pipe wrech method.

I replaced the heater fittings with plugs.

And the Milodon dipstick works perfectly with the shorty headers.

So today, I got the engine bay primed. That cheap a$$ Harbor Freight gun shot the primer perfect.

That piece of crap gave us hell with the color though. LOL It came out pretty good to me. I know it is not perfect, but I was not going for perfection. Just a decent looking engine compartment.

Mike, it may be a long time til it gets the rest of the body painted. I only did the engine compartment so I could get the new engine in there and not have to take it back out. Thanks though.

I took off the tape and started putting some stuff back on. I cleaned up the wiper motor but it is just for show. The damn casing on the wires is all dry rotted and broken. One wire is totally bare.

Anyhow, that is just in there until I can get a decent looking replacement. There is paint on the small brake lines but I don't really care since it will never be "show car quality" .

One side of the wire looms is not seated so I can still get the battery wire in there.

Got a bunch more done today. Got the radiator back. Put the horns in. Carb, coil, battery box, alernator, hooked up the starter. Kickdown cable hooked up at trans. Started to run the new engine wiring harness, etc.

Looks great!
Someone sure took on a project converting that to a 2 door!

By the way, how'd those headers fit around the p/s box?

Maybe a little shove from a breaker bar and the hot wrench will do the trick.

I can't imagine the amount of looks that thing has got to get when you're out driving around!

It gets a lot of looks. Thing is, I can't tell if it's horror, disgust or admiration.

Scott,

I had some high school friends who took the plexyglass wind guards on the front of their car and truck hoods and painted words like Ditch Bi-ch and Black Bi-ch on them. It's my suspicion that the looks that they received were more of disgust while the looks that you get are mainly awe with a tinge of horror mixed in (both are favorable in my book).

Keep rolling on your custom resto project!

Brian

Cool project , A friend of mine did one a few years back , though he didn't turn it into a hard top and he kept the rear windows .

Thanks! Been getting stuff done. Just gotta get more pics this weekend. The car is running but the headers are still open. Gonna start on the exhaust Saturday.

Thanks for the kind words. Here are a couple update shots. Still so much to do but it is running and driving.

Scott,

I just can't help but smirk with each additional post that you make regarding this project. Now that spring is here, you can hopefully get that great machine prowling the roads and make the local police a little nervous.

Keep up the pace,

Brian
