I have the original 22" rad. in my 68 road runner. It cools the .030 over 383" with out any issues, and there is no fan shroud. I am using the MP clutch fan assy. ( Although it is dangerously close)
The new engine is a mild 470" with Eddy heads and hydraulic cam.
Anyone using this setup with the a similar low deck stroker?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark, a friend has a 22" in his 1969 Roadrunner convertible

The only time it even tries to warm up is sitting in stop and go traffic on hot days. Otherwise it stays right at the 180-195 range.
He drove it several times this summer in 95+ plus days with no problems and it doesn't have a shroud either

Hi Larry,
It reads like you have little doubt about it? Have you had some issues with a 22" rad and cooling ?

Thanks,
Mark

It might, it might not. Won't know until its tried.
I would venture a guess that if the system is in good shape, the WP flows well, all will be fine.
Lots of factors at play here.

You may want to get a shroud on there though.

Greg,
I will be using a Milodon high flow pump, and they work very well. I have a shroud that I could use. I am about to install this new engine and didn't want it to over heat while I am breaking in the cam.
I think it might work on cooler days and not stuck in heavy traffic.
Thanks,
Mark

This car wears it's original 22" radiator.

Engine is a 511"- 13:1 ported Edelbrock heads, etc.. Easy 650 horse.

180 all day.

My '63 has a 3-row OEM-style 22" radiator and it's OK with my 446" motor since I put a shroud on it; without the shroud it would run 200 when sitting, now 185 (mechanical gauge).
Airflow through the core is probably more important on a 22" than a 26".
When I break in a fresh motor I always set up a fan in front of the car, which also helps blow the curing-paint smell away.

Mike,
I won't doubt your word, but things are looking hot in the picture!
That is more engine than what I am using for sure.I may have to give the old original a try. Is yours a 2 row?
Thanks,
Mark

My issues with a smaller rad have been all over this site...Had new 24 inch alum Afco...That didnt cool my 56 with the 440,went to a 24 Chrysler rad and hhr fan, worked ok except when running hard, it cooled down when stopped, but try to cruise at highway speeds it cooked..Finally I found a 26 in radiator from a Ford pick up and it runs so cool I rarely have to use the fans...Even now with the new stroker motor..Sooo when are we going to see that Allstate burning up the 1/4 mile???

Steve,
The 22" in my rr is a two row. I was thinking about having it recored to a 3 row. I have been talking to my radiator guy about it. It costs more than I expected though.
Thanks,
Mark

Well Larry,
I know if you had AFCO build that radiator it was a costly deal. I had one built for a customer last year. I hang out in the race forum mostly and I didn't read about your overheating issues!
What size stroker did you go with?
If all goes according to plan the Allstate will be out next season. I am about to take it apart for painting. Thanks for asking!
That is a great picture of your 56! Looks like your having fun!

Bill,
I didn't see a listing for the RR but I did find one for Chargers.
The price for a three core is really good/cheap!!!
