I started out pulling tractors way back when the rule book was re-wrote almost every year in the ntpa as things advanced and people got smarter.

Id love to get back in it but the money factor and the way things are done now are so foreign it would take years to get back in the groove.

But it was fun.

because stuff was made much better...
lots of things where real...hand made or made from scratch with craftsmanship...
not like today...
every thing is from china and throw away...
i have a watch from my grandfather that was handed down..to me..it cost him $150 in 1960
its now worth atleast 1000 bucks.but its a fine watch..for centimental value plus its real $ amount.
people dont care about this stuff right now.
tell me something worth handing down to your grandkids?....your plasma screen?,,your plastic watch.? oh i know you cell phone...
all worth zero...by next christmas..

this in general is the gist of it...
the more you put in the more you get out..
taken a sunday drive to the icecrean stand with your kids lately?
or a drive in movie?
oh i know .for a grilled burger served through
the window...?
i didnt think so...?
even if you could do this today..the kids would probably not want to go anyway..
they would rather stay home and wait for the text reply from the kid next door..
or choose to stay plugged into the playstation..
i mean why climb mount everest when you can just watch it/play it on a dvd....?

Its funny, I often tell my 12 year old son about " The Past", and he loves to hear the stories. I have done a lot and accomplished a lot for my age and engaged in many opportunites as I was younger. never afraid to jump in and try anything and wasnt afraid to work hard. he always asks me about what it was like doing this or that years ago. he is already smart enough to realize that we live in a self consuming all about me society. He knows the past was more honest and wholesome. He always says he wishes he could go back and see what things were like. He suspects it was better.I would agree with him.

As far as racing in the past, hell , its how we all got started. You cant help but remember it. It was real racing then. Blood, sweat and gears.

YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING... the cars back then were junk
compared to a car now... the engine back then would
live about 100K the metal fell off and we wont even
talk about the GAPS/margins so I dont buy the car
thing but some of the other stuff about the younger
people is correct BUT does that make you want to
stay in the past

through the years of my 20's 30's and 40's i liked to look back to see if i could ever catch up with what my buddy's had done to their cars .
Now at almost 60 i look to the future cause my time is getting short and i don't try and keep up with anyone.

One thing is for sure. Nobody will be looking for a 50 year old model year 2000 anything in 2050. None of the "new" or "modern" cars will be around that long. They are all disposable / recyclable, 1-time use and throw it away kind of possessions now.

The "in" thing now at car shows seem to be unrestored old race cars from the '60-70's. Looking at what pieces of crap they were it amazes me that we have any old drag racers left around. Factor in that most of the tracks back then were barely safer than street racing and you can double that thought.

I like looking at the old cars/pics though to see how many I remember from when I started racing.

Lots of people like to whine about the NHRA now and how much things cost, and how much cheaper it was back then. Unfortunately for me, it wasn't any cheaper back then because I didn't make much money and couldn't afford it anyway.

The good old days are fun to look at now and then, but I for one am glad they're gone.

I have to log into this. I was there, my match race pupose in drag racing was to get paid to be there to get beat up on by guys like Ronnie Sox, Don Carlton, Don Nickolson, etc. At the reunion in Henderson, the last year he was alive Ronnie, Bobby Warren and myself were standing in front of the elevator discussing this same thing. We were talking about how much fun it was in those days unlike racing now. The fact that we were out there, a racer paid by a large corporation, a tobacco farmer racing out of a tobacco barn in Clinton, NC and a speed shop clerk racing some weeks every night. As Buddy Martin said when he got paid his first $500 as a book in show he thought they had hit the big time. We talked about John Force and where he came from sleeping in his truck and eating balogna sandwiches to have to answer to all of the people he has to look after. If you think the history of drag racing and the interest is gone go to Face book and search East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame Part 1 and Part 2. Watch the video and see the ages of the people there. The future of drag racing will never match the history of drag racing.

yeah cars were junk back then, that's why a Hemi Cuda cost about 150 thousand now
100k on the engine, but easy to replace. I will say that cars were different back then. New cars are a lot better right now but I enjoyed what I had then and I also enjoy what I have now. A manīs life is a mix of his past, his present and they way he looks at the future.

The only reason they cost that much now is due to
the low amount made and at that price it better be
a real nice one... and most likely it had 50K put
into it to get that price

I figure if I go back to the past I'll get all my hair back and lose the grey/silver and get that masculine figure back..

and of course see all my old girl friends as I didnt get married the first time till I was 37...

I definetly love the past best. I grew up in the 60's and started driving in 1974 but I was into drag racing in the 60's. I know I love the past better and I guess thats why I dont care for cowl hoods on Mopars and I am not a fan of the areo scoops either. I prefer the scoops of the era the cars are from. I loved the fact that even in 1972 you could still see your Drag Race hero at your local track match racing. I saw Ronnie Sox race at our local track as well as Dyno Don and Da Grump. Do you think you will ever see a Pro at your local tracks today ?? Match racing was so cool. And I love the Factory SS wars as it helped with some of the muscle cars produced. Times were much less hectic and I liked the cars much better. And the cars looked way cooler then this ugly stuff they make today. But when it comes to my job I know more about the electronics on the new Mopars then anyone at the dealers I have worked at as thats basically all I do is work on the new car electronics. But I would much rather work restoring muscle cars any day. Ron

Back in the mid-70's when all the local tracks ran Modified, Super Stock and Stock every week, you had to get there early on Saturday afternoon to get a good seat in the stands. There were bleachers for maybe 2-3000 at Edgewater back then, plenty of room down track to back up to the fence with your pickup or wagon and and watch from near the finish line. This was on the spectator side, the pit side was race cars only and you had to pay $1 to cross over to see the action in the pits.

If they ran a booked-in Funny Car show, the fans would be 5-deep at the starting line. They also had a Division 3 Winston meet every year when they ran TF, FC, and Pro Stock for national points. They always had a full field of cars.

By the time of the mid-80's bracket racing had taken over, gas prices and inflation seriously depleted the sport. You would still see a decent crowd of spectators at the tracks, good crowd if they ran Q16, UDRA, or match race.

Today there are so many options for entertainment that very few people want to watch drag racing anymore. People would rather sit at home and watch inane TV shows than go to the local strip, my friends say it is boring, it takes too long, it's too hot out, etc., etc., but they will spend time and money going to casinos and pro sporting events.

Yes, Mr. P those were the good old days for drag racing.

It was exciting to see what was going to be offered by the auto makers for the new year. Now the real high perf cars are heavy in weight and $. I can't get excited about them.
