For a friend that is debating between a wedge or an Elephant. What is a sweet (street driven on week ends only) Hemi motor to cost from a reputable source. A decent hydraulic cam is much wanted, but a small solid may not be an issue. This ride is a 70'B-body with a stick, 323 gears out back.

for that type of use it's pocketbook decision.
nothing beats a hemi if not just for the WOW factor alone.
Same as for the cost vs. return when it's sold.
Value wise a wedge with 20,00 miles is just another motor while a Hemi is still a Hemi.

15k is about right. If you're going to go the used parts/scrounge route, I built one for 8k but it was a used block, crank, heads, lots of stuff except the cam stuff & oiling---those were new..

$15k is in the ball park. Swap in some exotic head gaskets or some crazy porting or valve train and the price goes way up.

We just built one for a little less, but not much. It was a 477 street Hemi with a small solid cam, non-roller, pump gas motor. It has pushed the nearly stock '70 Charger to 11.1's at 4010lbs with 4.10 gears. This is after it has wrecked 4 rear ends one drive saft and a bunch of other parts. Its just amazing how hard these engines run.

it's not the cost of the engine... it's the cost of all the other stuff that goes with it..!
e.g. throttle linkages, exhaust, exit fitting on p/s box, accessory drives, starter, bell, other misc unique fittings and parts for Hemi to make it fit and work even in a body it originally came out in.. etc etc etc..

I would call Tim Banning from FHO (For Hemis Only) . They built mine and I am very happy with it and them. My bill there was 22k But the engine was complete with carbs, air cleaner fuel pump ,wires the works. That also included the TTI headers and exhaust system as Tim is a TTI dealer.

Mine is a 528 Hyd. cam duels 4's 687 dynoed HP.
