I put about 3K miles a year on it, so nothing exorbitant, but it's also not a "conversation piece". It's about a 50 mile run out to Good Guys in Fort Worth, all highway at 70 MPH. I like the high gears and shifting 1-4, and the point of the 5th gear is for the highway, so why should I bother changing to a lower rear end if I'm looking at putting a 5 speed in.

I'll throw in my as to why I'd like to have Jamie's trans. I've got a 727 and a 3:55 rear now, if I go with the new 5 speed I get:
1. The pure joy of rowing my own gears
2. Cruising at 2400 rpm instead of an ear-grating 3500 rpm. And in CA all the cruises, car shows, etc. require freeway travel
3. A 2.64 first gear instead of a 2.45 for a better launch
4. One more gear to keep it in the sweet spot when me and the guy next to me are both in a hurry to get to the next stop light.

while saving fuel is a noble effort, it is not what we are in disagreement on. its the initial premium for the od which includes the cost of the part(s) as well as installation.

if you were really that worried about gas you would not be driving a 30 year old car with a v8 and a carb!

if you want me to agree that buying an o/d has benefits - yes i agree

if you want me to take you seriously and to think that driving a 30 year old car with an O/D is really the solution to our dependency on foreign oil than i am sorry i cannot do that.

i guess i dont drive my cars enough for it to matter.

What do you guys find so wrong with wanting to build a car that will cruise at a more comfortable rpm on the highway and get a few more MPG? I know a lot of you guys don't really drive your cars but some of us do. What if I told you I'm setting my car up so I can take it on a road trip across the country. Suddenly 2000rpm on the highway and a couple more mpg doesn't sound so bad. You don't want an overdrive, don't but one. Simple as that. I don't understand what there is to over.

i agree with you 100% i just think it is funny how some people justify investment decisions. the saving gas part just cracks me up. classic cars are discretionary investments. if we were so worried about saving money we would all be in econo-boxes!

rather than saying i want to save gas $, why cant one just say, " i am car guy and have no control over spending money on shiny car parts! and i want it because its frickin' cool"

that to me would be a much better justification.

WOW! You are a one dimensional thinker. MPG is one of many reasons a person might want one. You, along with some others, seem to have gotten hung up on that as the sole reason a person might buy one.

Incredible! Try thinking about something more than just the first thing that pops into your mind for a change, then you won't be on the internet telling people they are out in left field because they think an OD trans is something they might want to purchase.

There are other problems with your lack of critical thinking skills. Sure I'm not being fuel efficient in my 1969 car with a big block. That doesn't mean that I should or should want to waste the fuel I use for my hobby. If you are seriously saying that is your goal, send me a set amount of money every month. You might as well if that is your attitude.

See above. MANY reasons for running a trans like this. One is that you can run a really low gear and not buzz the engine. That shouldn't be hard to grasp, yet here you are.

Nobody is saying that you have to change gears BTW. In fact, I would keep my 3.23s as is.

DUDE i agree with you, O/D is a good idea for those who will benefit from it.

i was commenting on how many of the arguments are 1-d, or otherwise poorly supported.

i dont need to tell you about my education or my professional accomplishments to make myself feel better, but lets just say i am def not a 1-d thinker.

good luck with your project.

personally, i hope they sell a ton of 5 speeds, that way i can get my hands on an 18-spline a body 4 speed on the cheap.

Yeah, there is plenty to like about it, benefits guys that need a 4 speed. You started w/ agreement but then went wayward, hence the return volley.

Most of you girls that won't buy it at $4300 wouldn't buy it if it was $500.
I'm just glad Jamie is bringing out a well-designed, quality manufactured, new, 5 speed manual that will fit in a classic Mopar without having to wreck it. Great product! I just sold an E-body 18 spline and am happy I'll be able to replace it with something superior.

That's my plan too, wait for the regular 18-spine transmission price to drop and get one for my track-only car. The factory 833-OD isn't going to be satisfactory for long.

I can tell you that there is NO way that I am posting a picture of the internals of the trans on here. There are items that are being patented in this unit, so I don't need any aggravation. I can tell you that the speed gears are approximately 3/16" wider than the gears in an 18 spline A-833 .

As for the Mcleod unit, being under $3000, I am not doubting this. I could easily make a unit in Korea and sell it for that money and be fine. My standpoint is this: (and I am not getting poetic here.) It is stuff like this that is destroying our Country. Everyone running overseas to make stuff because it is cheaper. That is the reason we are in this situation. Now, I am not cutting their product. That is your God given right to do this. It is my God given right to not do it. The single most important thing to me was to make this unit in the USA. PERIOD. It may sound stupid, but I am VERY proud to do this. Am I cutting out a certain market because of the price? I am sure that I am, BUT it is more important to me to do this here than just contribute to the delinquency that surrounds us. To each his own. If they want to do this, that is up to them. I liken it to motorcycle 6 speeds. We are the Baker, McLeod is the Rev Tech. Plain and simple. The Baker is considerably more money, and in many peoples opinion, is of considerably higher quality. Can everyone afford one? No, that is where the Rev Tech comes in. The only thing with the Rev Tech is that it "just doesn't fit quite right." Again, I am not cutting anyone's product. There was a goal that was laid out when we started this project. It was to make the BEST bolt in USA made 5 speed transmission. I think that we accomplished this. As for the Mcleod being a bolt in? Again, I am not cutting on it, but man, I don't know how one tailhousing with obvious speedo cable issues is gonna fit three different Chrysler platforms. Maybe I am wrong, but we shall see. For the record, I have nothing against McLeod. I do LOVE McLeod clutches. I feel that they are the best on the market, I just don't agree with their rationale on this trans.

Have you give any thought to how this transmission will fit in off-brand applications? If the Ford and GM guys buy them too you might have one hot product on your hands.
