after spinning a rod bearing at 250 miles the engine is redone and back in the Cuda. I have the timing set at 10* BTDC and advance is at 34* yet when I back off the gas I get popping out both pipes and it seems I am getting a slight surge action while highway driving. I was told locally to retard the timing about five degrees, do you agree

No,don't retard it.Check for a fluxuation in the distributer timing advance/retard,or a lean condition first.

I agree, probably lean, Especially check the idle circuits on all three carbs.

surge usualy means lean doesn't it? I'd think 34* would be not enough timing. I usually set my total 1st and don't worry to much about int. If your vacuum advance is hooked up you could be advancing a lot more than you think. I'd probably start at 36* total @ 2600rpm and work form there.

You'll need to experiment with it. Some work better with, some without. Some like ported vacuum, some like manifold vacuum.

I've never used the vacuum on any of my big block builds. Not to say you can't, just never have.
