Hello everybody. I need a little help. I need a cam for my Hemi Dart clone and I would like to hear what you would run. Here is what I have.

472 ci.
Mopar/Edelbrock aluminum heads with mild port work.
10.5 to 1 compression
A&A Cross Ram, stock
Two Holley 660cfm carbs, stock.
Prestolite Distributor.
3:55 gears
727 with standard gear ratio.
2800 stall
TTI headers (more on that later )

This car will see 95% street use.
I would like it to sound mean but streetable.
I'm open to Roller, Hydraulic Roller and Mechanical cams.

What do you think??

Thanks,

Hydraulic rollers don't work very well on Hemi's due to the length of the lifter body & the angle of the pushrods vs the clearance available for the pushrod... With the number of flat lobes on standard flat tappet cams these days & the cost to completely go through a Hemi I'd limit the selection to solid rollers...

if you're running a world block, i'd clearance for the pushrods and run a hydraulic roller... getting those valve covers off to adjust the valves will be a PITA.

Any work been done to the heads ? How tall of tire ? With tall tire you need more gear.
No way on the hydraulic roller, stick with a tight lash solid roller around 250 @ 50 600 lift.
You need more convertor I highly recommend the Turbo Action 17805-ST 3,800. The ST stands for street tight and it will work great with your combination on the street I've ran it with your same combination for 6 years now in my 70 pro street Cuda. The convertor is locked up during normal in town crusing and driving but when you put the power to it that's when it will flash the rpm to free up the engine. Do not use a 2,800 you will not like it it's to tight for the engine to work good. I have a 31.5 x 18.5 tire and run a 4.10 gear, 3,000 rpm at around 60-65 mph. Above 3,000 the secondaries come in and it sounds great but it drinks fuel at that point. I get 9.5 to 10 mpg with normal driving.

Very interesting info with some very good ideas.

I'm using a older Mopar block, not a World block.
Tires....people will not like this but....I'm making this Dart look like it just left the Hurst assembly plant so it will have 7.75/15 in the rear and a 6.95/14 in the front. I believe I will have another set of wheels and tires on the side for some more street use.

Drivability is very important to me. I want to be able to drive this thing on the street and make it live but I would like a little power behind it.

I would like around 475 to 500 hp.

....there is nothing like driving my 1968 Hemi Dart around town and having people looking at you like you're nuts!!

Troy, The above combo like mine has very good street manners and drivability with adequate power to boot, You should make around 550-600hp easley and be very pleased. You need the extra stall to get the engine up in the operating power band of the camshaft. 472 and larger cube motors are torque monsters, it will blow the tires off, maybe you should go with a softer compound tires as well.

FWIW I pretty much have the same combo but I have a 4 sp and 3:54 gears, stage V heads and inline stage V intake.

I went with a small solid roller from Lunati (had it custom ground for peanuts above an off the shelf piece) Specs as follows:

.582 lift intake (depends on rocker ratio)
.563 lift exhaust (depends on rocker ratio)
280 total intake duration (244 at .050)
287 total exhaust duration (251 at .050)
110 lobe seperation.

I get 16" of vacuum at idle. It's a street grind so the ramps are gentler and you dont need stupid spring pressure. I have an installed height of 1.9", 190lbs closed, 450lbs open. It revved to 6500rpm on the dyno with no problems. Plus it wont beat up the lifters. This combo made 658HP at 6500 rpm. Really nice idle. It will idle at 750rpm if I wanted it to but I Keep it around 1000 to get oil on the lifters. Very nice car by the way.

John, That appears to be the same cam I run. Correct you don't have to have nor do you want monster spring pressures for street use. And also 1,000 rpm at idle on mine.

That cam sounds what I'm looking for!!

Question for you....did either of you guys bush you lifter bores to run a solid roller cam??

There's no need to bush the lifter bores, you just need to get lifters with the oiling holes perpendicular to the main gallery. i.e. the oil holes are NOT exposed to the oil gallery pressure and unlimited volume.

In my 528 Hemi I'm currently installing a solid roller speced by Rich N thats 245 254 @ 50 and .630 lift, 114 lobes centers but its for EFI using 225 lb on the seat and just over 600 open. Rich said this stuff should last a long time without messing with it on the street.

No bushed bores here. I'm running the el chepo comp 928 lifters. For the kind of spring pressures I'm running, I'm not worried about them at all. I checked them after 3000mi and they are like new. Just make sure you limit the cam end play to .005" (roadhazzard on this board sells some different thickness timing cover gaskets for this purpose) and keep the oil pressure to a reasonable level (30lbs at idle 70-80 in the 2500 rpm range) and you will get good life from the distributor drive. If you run a mechanical fuel pump make sure the cam has the eccentric and you use a bronze tipped push rod. Bee Hive springs will help keep the valve train weight down further helping longevity.

So....how about those TTI headers?? PLEASE tell me that they used your car as a mule to build a set of headers that fit an A body with a hemi!

I can't stand the suspense..

So far everybody that I have talked to all have had custom roller cams....why is that?? How come nobody makes an out of the box cam that is worth anything???

I like the idea of a solid roller but are they any solid mechanical flat tappet cams out there that make good power??? If I can save $800 and go with a flat tappet.....I would give up the extra HP.

What do you think??

Hemi stroker (purchased the block ,heads and intake from you when you were at Westoaks) Mopar/Edelbrock heads mild port job,Vanke modified factory intake with 2 x 650AVS, comp custom high energy street roller. 244/255@.050 .575/.582 on 112 lsa. real soft springs #comp 953 are 150 on the seat and 425 open. 10.7 comp, factory exhaust manifolds. Engine pulled clean through to 6500rpm and made max HP of 632 @6100.
I look at it this way, you only have to wipe one flat tappet cam and its cost you more than putting in a roller the first time.

If you look at all of the roller cams available for a Hemi, they are very radical. Very large lifts and big duration numbers. I guess they figure if you want a roller cam for a Hemi you are looking for big power. Not a good mix for the street. Even some of the solid lift flat cams are a bit much for daily street use.

So...Do you have 1/2" spacers between your K member and frame rails?

I have a Barton Spec Solid Flat Tappet (Bullet Racing) for that very engine you have there I would sale cheap....
New in the box, never out of the plastic. He has sold many of these very same cams, and said it works very well...
I have $200+ in it. I will sell it for $100 shipped
PM me if interested.
Thanks
Bob
