As the rubbing block wears on the points the gap gets smaller, so a slight drag at the .017 setting is usually good. Be sure to wipe clean the feeler guage before using it, so you do not wipe oil or contaminats on the contacts of the points., and add a very small dab of dilectric grease on the bubbing block..

The factory spec is just an arbitrary setting for a certain interval b 4 servicing is needed. You can actually set em wherever you want & for high performance even as low as .010". Smaller gap =longer dwell time (hotter spark from more saturation time)=shorter life (more closed time for them to burn) =less likely to bounce at higher rpms (not off the anvil as high so less bounce. All the above is inversely proportional. For the longest life go at least the factory gap even a bit more. EDIT as said check the side to side play as the spring tension at the rubbing block wears the bushings far more than an electronic one esp if hi perf (more spring tension) points have been used extensively in it. Might get a rebuilt advance auto point dist (supposedly cheap) like the Pertronix conversion guys are doing

0.018 works for all engines every time, not saying there isn't another hundredth to be squeezed out with a different setting. But if you're in the desert a matchbook cover will get the job done too. Double up the matchbook cover for plug gap. This thanks to dear departed Granville King. Anyone remember reading him in the 70s? R.
