Thanks for the article Fred. Ya, his reasons for retirement are "all over the board" ( almost like a JF interview where when he is done you have to ask yourself - what did he say?? ). At any rate, I was lucky enough to get a tour of John Farkonas's garage ( where they worked on one of the early Hustlers ) from Pat Minick ( I think he was driving at the time )back in the 70's. It was a 2 car cinder block garage. The race car sat in the middle ( no engine in it ) and was surrounded by hemi engine parts - heads with the zoomies on them, blocks in all stages of assemble / disassembly - some "windowed", etc. It wasn't pretty - nor was the car. Got the attached autographed pic from Coil back in the 90's.

No, never had the chance to live the dream. Sure the road life must be tough but would have thought if it was too much noone would do it for all those years. He could have easily asked for a leave of absense. If money wasnt the issue, why discussed in so much detail. Doubt Austin Coil was not valued as an employee. Seen Ceo's work for a buck a yr to help the co.? Do it for pride and the scorecard of success. So they make a buck, they not valued? Sometimes you see one take one for the team and it is refreshing. Rather than throw in the towel, they look ahead to a payoff in the future. Especially after such a long relationship. Just hard to fathom him leaving all those guys that he said he wants to be friends for life with. I didnt see where his co said he wasnt valued. Must be more to story, will be interesting. Also thanks Fred.

like in any there's always more than we will ever get to see. One thing is for sure that granted Coil brought his expertise and knowledge to the team. But it was John Force who saw to it that that team had the best equipment and lastest technolgy needed to succeed . they had the firsy dyno to test superchargers before anyone else ever thought of it. Without the support of Force in providing the tools needed Coil would not be able to have half the sucess

I wonder if Don Schumacher is furiously trying to re-arrange his Crew Chief line-up right now...?
Well, Coil is originally from Chicago...........
I think The don may have outsmarted himself I thought the Ace was doing good. Now he's gone.
I have always had the HIGHEST opinion of Austin. But the last couple years I wondered if he was falling behind in the learning curve with the new inovations JFR had put in the FCs.
To me it looked like as soon as Zippy took over tuning John's car came around in round wins and qualifiing #s. Don

clutcher, have you been going to the track since the early 70s, without a real break for at least the past 20 years?
The top people in any field don't see money as a way to keep a roof over the head and food on the table. I sure hope that Austin is beyond that and has been for many years. What it's about is a scorecard. It's a measure of what their value is in the marketplace. That's why it hurts, not because austin had to cut back to mac and cheese and turn down the thermostat, but because his worth to the company has dropped and he decided to take a break instead of putting his all in for a company that has now said he isn't as valuable.
