I have searched this extensively here on moparts, but have not gotten much feedback on this...Which 440 Rear Main Seal works best (brand and configuration-rubber sides or fiber sides...)?
I understand they will all seal if applied correctly--but is there one that is better (maybe easier to do while engine is in the car) than the others?
Thanks

The Viton seals seem to be the best. Get the kit with the Viton rubber side seals too, the old method of silicone sealing the retainer sides to the block sucks!

the one guy on here used strings from an old style mop and packed them into the sides & said sealed perfect/not a drop

Thank you much!
I assume these are available at Napa or Carquest?

The last fel-pro seal I bought didn't come with any seals for the sides, just a tube of RTV and 2 pipe cleaners. The instructions said to fill up the sides with RTV and then wet the pipe cleaners and stuff them down in there. I thought it was kind of but it worked and doesn't leak.
I did need more RTV than they give you though.

The only thing I don't like is the RTV squeezes out the sides pretty good leaving big blobs of it behind the #5 main cap.

I ordered a set of viton side and lip seals from 440Source yesterday. I will keep you posted...

Super Performance makes the best viton rear main seal including rear side seals. you can get them from Mike at Chenowethspeedandnachine.com or call 309-266-8084. I run them in my car.

Best Machine makes a pretty sweet rear main that you may want to consider.

How smooth is the sealing surface?

I prefer a rope seal if the factory cross hatch isn't worn smooth myself.

It isn't usually a problem now because almost all these cranks have 50 bazillion miles and have been worn smooth long ago.
