I started to do a long overdue inventory of my carburetors yesterday, and ran across a stamping that looks totally bogus to me. I had bought the pair of 4619S/4621S 1969 Hemi Automatic carbs about 18 months ago through a friend, and had never really looked at them when he delivered them.

I guess that I am hoping that I am wrong, and it is just a style that I am not familiar with... But the pad looks milled down too...

If it is bogus, the price was cheap enough that I am still OK with the deal. The legit 4619S is worth what I paid for the pair...

So whats the verdict?...

XS

It just looked like such a poor forgery, that I thought there might be another explanation... like a factory reworked unit or ??? ...just grasping for straws I suppose.

I have seen a variety of marking on Carter carbs, but never anything like that on late 60s vintage.

Well, I think that I have an extra '70 model front carb IIRC... I'll use it for trade material to try to get a 4620S to make a 4 speed set.

Thanks for the replies...

you should have no prob with your trade, since 70 carbs are more valuable and rarer than 69s

i wish i had an extra 4620 for you but i only have a pair

all of the carb pics you just posted look legit except for 1405, which going by the finish may be a newer edelbrock that im not as familiar with the stampings on those

Thanks Danny - Its just one of those things that happens when you hunt L'phants... Surprising thing is that it came from Bob C.'s collection... wonder if he realized it had issues?

Yep, that was a newer aftermarket version. BTW, I tried calling your business yesterday several times but the line was busy. Wanted to see if you had a 4617S AVS carb for my 1969 Charger 500 4 Speed...

And thanks again for your input on the stamping.

Allen

It's hard to say, possibly he had to buy the bad to get the good. I just hope it's a long time before I get to ask him.

Here is an example of what you spoke of. These are 1962 300H carburetors. The size and font are quite different.

That is weird... Thanks for posting that picture Danny. I am going to do a side by side comparison with the known 4621S that I have... to see how they match up. I even wonder if someone restamped a 4620S or other Hemi carb as a 4621S... that would be such a waste of a Hemi carb!

I'd bet it is another HEMI carb that had the "wrong" number for someones project.

When profit is the motive many numbers have been re-stamped on carbs/engines/transmissions
DESTOYING the possibility of reunion with the original vehicle or application.

Here's a pair I have I'm sure the poorly restamped carb was the '70 front to make a proper pair.
Good thing only the front is readily visible in the car or they'd both be wrecked!

WOW Dan... that is a worse forgery job than mine. I think I could do better with an assortment of small screwdrivers used as punches to hand write the numbers in...

I have seen a wide range of factory carb stamping fonts, double stamps, factory restamps, plain old mistakes, and a number of other oddities, but the milled off pad is the clincher in that one being bogus for certain.

Maybe Dan & I should make a set of bogus Hemi carbs out of his rear carb & my front carb. We could mill the pads again and restamp them both "Z0 OU812" or "X9 BR549"... Might as well laugh about it... I suppose.

Well, thanks again everyone for the input.

Scott,

Have you seen one that's not stamped at all??
