i have a 72 demon that i drag race. it has a 360 with a set of x heads. i am currently running a set of hooker super comp headers with 1 5/8 primearies, but i am looking at going to a set of 1 3/4 headers. i found a set of of step headers that step from 1 5/8 to 1 3/4 but they are for a w-2 head. i want to know what the diffrence is between the two exhaust ports. and because it is a really good deal on the headers and i work in a weld shop is it plausable to have a new set of flanges lasered out and welded to the headers. thanks, chris

W2 has a slightly higher exhaust port and the mounting pattern is different, the bolts are closer to the centerline of the ports. So the answer is yes, with a W2 flange and a little shaping to match the port shape. Mind you its going to sit a little higher in the chassis too, but not much, maybe less than an inch.

There are 2 W2 patterns, but I've run W2 headers on X heads before. Adapters are not a big deal, just be sure to have them ground dead flat, and you can use the high-temp orange silicone to seal everything. It'll be easier to mount everything up if you cut the flanges, which I do on every set of headers anyway, for that reason as well as to eliminate warpage, lose a couple of pounds, improve spark plug access, and improve appearance.
Double-check the flanges if you want to run 13/16" plugs, some are tight; 5/8" is no problem.

ok thanks for the help. my idea was to just copy the flanges that i have on the hookers i have now. i have acess to a cnc laser and tig at work and it would be nothing to cut out a new set of flanges and then cut the current flanges off the header and weld the x flanges to them. sometimes its nice being able to weld and fab your own parts, saves a lot of money

True, Econo's have both patterns (?) I ran a W2 Strip Dominator intake on an X headed 340 back in the day before I found a standard SD intake. Couldnt really tell the difference!
