I am in the market for a used trailer & have seen a few of the recent posts about some of the DO's when buying a trailer & I agree with them...

GET IT at LEast 2' longer than what you think.(for me 28' should work)
Get heavier axles.
16" centers
6" extra height.....I borrowed one that was standard & whacked my head numerous times when stepping out!!

The one thing I am questioning is the rear gate LIMITS??? Are they strong enough to support a 2500 or 3500 Diesel truck?
skid steer??
Tractor??

ANY SUGGESTIONS??????????

Assuming your talking enclosed trailers,I would not suggest using them to hall 3/4 ton trucks or skidsteers.Repeated use will eventually bend the door frame. It's the point loads that cause the damage.Consult the manufacture for the load limit of the trailer floor and ramp door.An adverage skidsteer at 10,000 lbs would point load each tire at 2500lbs.A 3500lb,50/50 car would point load aprox 875lbs per tire.

Don't forget that skidsteers are short wheelbase. ALL 4 tires on the ramp door would fold it up like a cheap lawn chair.

My 28' with 1' extra height hauled a full size 4x4 pulling truck for 6 years before I got it, ramp door is slightly tweaked.

My 26' Pace is rated at 12,000lbs and the ramp door is rated at 7,000. I never had anything with more weight than 2-2,500 lbs on one axle go over it. I back my car 1/2-way out and put it on jackstands on the ramp door to rotate tires and work on the breaks, but that's still light.

I suppose you could custom build it to specs, but it would be heavy and expensive. And pray that the door cables never pop!

What about a pair of swing-out doors with heavy steel ramps that fold up behind them, like on the flatbed trailers that haul big machinery?

Then there's another problem.......will you have enough room between the trailer wheel tubs for the 2500/3500 tires/track to fit in between? I hauled a 2005 Dakota once and it was a close fit everywhere.

Thanks for the replies!!

I see the point about the skid steer being real short & all that weight being supported by just the door!!

a 102" wide trailer would have either 81" or 82" between the wheel wells & the older trucks 72-93 trucks fit But I was just thinking out loud!!!
