Mark ..... Sorry - but I would not put a 10 mpg 440 on the top of my wish-list !
No lie! But it does beg the question of what the highest MPG one COULD get froma 440 driven MOPAR vehicle, still street legal. I would think anything over 20 would be in the running. Fuel Injection would be a major plus towards that endeavor.

I think the best thing you could do for a 440 mpg motor would be to build it with the smallest cam you can dream up like 180 duration @ .050 and as much lift as you can get. This should make for a real low peak tq rpm, then gear the snot out of it. Something like a 2.45 with OD 4 spd. This is the basic idea the LS... camaroes and corvets use and some of them get near 30 mpg. Get a nice tight quench area with some 516 heads and bump up the compression as much as you can on your fuel. Run some small tube real long headers to help boost tq at low rpms. Get a small 2 plane intake and run an 800 thermo quad. I bet with proper tuneing and disiplin in driving habits high 20s would be possible.

My dad's stone-stock 94 Corvette got 30-31mpg on a trip to Oklahoma City last week. Not too shabby for an honest 300hp on tap. Edelbrock is claiming their new EB/Musi 555" BBC can pull mid-upper 20's on the highway, and still has 675hp/650tq on tap when you "need" it. I guess it's possible that with sufficient tuning you COULD pull that kind of mileage on the highway without MDS, but it would take a pile of development time to do it. I'm not sure that a carb could be made to do that without some sort of electronic timing control. Clair

There was a strange guy at the Chrysler Classic from Nashville that was claiming 30mpg on his Ebody 440. Something about putting the rods in backwards? Hew as the same guy that had mentioned old cop cars drilling holes in brake drums to let the gas out under hard braking.
