In the days of 4+$ regular gas .... what could be more practical than this? But HONEST mpg figures and REALISTIC goals.

Did anyone see that guy in OH with that 5.0 Mustwang ? ... claiming 100 mpg... and having the performance of going 0-60 in 3 seconds ??... LOL ...yeah RIGHT !

the 323" 340 cam, streetmiester sp topped w/ a SA770, 4 door stick, gets 14 city / 14-16 highway.

my 440 cuda is a full scale model. last couple tanks 10 city / 10 highway is fair.

my 95 integra gets 24 city / 30 highway, which was on the window sticker.

No lie! But it does beg the question of what the highest MPG one COULD get froma 440 driven MOPAR vehicle, still street legal. I would think anything over 20 would be in the running. Fuel Injection would be a major plus towards that endeavor.

I think the best thing you could do for a 440 mpg motor would be to build it with the smallest cam you can dream up like 180 duration @ .050 and as much lift as you can get. This should make for a real low peak tq rpm, then gear the snot out of it. Something like a 2.45 with OD 4 spd. This is the basic idea the LS... camaroes and corvets use and some of them get near 30 mpg. Get a nice tight quench area with some 516 heads and bump up the compression as much as you can on your fuel. Run some small tube real long headers to help boost tq at low rpms. Get a small 2 plane intake and run an 800 thermo quad. I bet with proper tuneing and disiplin in driving habits high 20s would be possible.

i have had a couple of stock late c-bodys that would get 20-22 mpg on the interstate. wouldn't do very well around town, but on the open road with cruse set. it was all good.

My 68 New Yorker with original 440 gets on average 16.28 MPG with the best of 18 highway.Thats when I do the speed limit drafting a tractor trailer with the wind behind me.
City driving I average 12 MPG.
I am running TTi 2-1/2 system,RV purple camshaft,452 heads,750 Carter ans Pertronix ignition in the orginal recurved dizzy.3.23 gears and 23570R15 tires.
This is the toy and I am not worried about MPG.If I was,I would be driving a Honda.

My daily driver is a 87 Dippy bone stock 'Teen except electronic ignition and gets 24 MPG highway.17 city.I paid $150.00 for this car in 2004.I burn on average back and forth to work $90.00 every two weeks.
I dont have any car payments but I make up for at the pump.Money wise I am still ahead.

I get 14-15 on the highway with a 4-speed and 3.23 rear and a tired motor. Looking to get over 20 with a rebuild and a 5-speed.

my old 340 with a 750 carter, eddy perf rpm cam, trw forged slugs, headers, and 3.91s got over 22 going to the beach on several occasions! And went 11.60 on the bottle! dont ask me how this stuff works, but it did.

Here is an interesting article regarding using an LM1 to tune a chevy. 550 HP and 500 + ft lbs. of torque while getting 21 MPG is pretty darn good in my books. If it can be done with a chevy, can't see why it can't be done with a mopar.

Yes, but the U.S. was built on cheap gas. For the most part, we don't have public transporation options and large distances to cover since our population isn't as dense as European countries. Almost everybody drives private vehicles. We "could" be energy dependent, but the idiotic politicians prohibit the oil companies from drilling and then call them in for hearings blaming them for the high prices. Drill here, drill now but develop alternatives in the meantime. Anyway, my 69 Charger with a 440 gets around 14 mpg city and 18 highway. It's an auto with 3.23 gears and a RV Purple cam. My Metro (a.k.a. The Celibacymobile) got 50 mpg! Unfortunately I was stopped on the freeway last year and some lady rear-ended me doing 60 mph. Pisses me off everytime I drive by the pump. Wish I still had that car.

My dad's stone-stock 94 Corvette got 30-31mpg on a trip to Oklahoma City last week. Not too shabby for an honest 300hp on tap.

Edelbrock is claiming their new EB/Musi 555" BBC can pull mid-upper 20's on the highway, and still has 675hp/650tq on tap when you "need" it. I guess it's possible that with sufficient tuning you COULD pull that kind of mileage on the highway without MDS, but it would take a pile of development time to do it. I'm not sure that a carb could be made to do that without some sort of electronic timing control.

There was a strange guy at the Chrysler Classic from Nashville that was claiming 30mpg on his Ebody 440. Something about putting the rods in backwards? Hew as the same guy that had mentioned old cop cars drilling holes in brake drums to let the gas out under hard braking.

With NikaSil piston bore linings
14 to 1 compression ratio using Atkinson Cycle like late closing of the intake valve,
and crank bearings cut down to Honda bearing size,
and an aftermarket efi system with wide range O2 sensor feedback,
any older V8 would show modest fuel economy improvement....say 20 to 25%

But we should keep in mind that what we really want is a low cost per mile driven, and right now converting to compressed natural gas is the best option, and what FedEx and UPS are showing interest in.

There are already about a dozen pages on a 318 mileage build up here. Search and I'm sure you can find it.

FWIW, my 3/4 ton truck knocks down 16-18 on the highway with a +.060 over 440, carb, auto trans, 4:10 gears, and 33" tall tires. Around town it drops to 10ish depending on driving habits. It is hard to keep your foot out a engine with as much torque as this thing has.
