I am reading about conflicting balance issues associated with the 5.9l magnum engine.
I have: 95' 5.9l engine 96' torque converter (I believe the extra piece of metal on it is for balancing 95' flexplate (came with engine)
Mating to an A518 from a 92' Dakota (5.2l option).
Does the flex plate or the converter or both get the balance treatment? Thanks for any info you might have. I can take pics if neccessary.

I don't even have 1/2 lift, but the other 1/2 is nitroused.

That is where I am being thrown. I believe the TC has the weight since there is an additional piece (about 1"x2") of metal welded on the side. I also believe the flexplate I have is balanced because there is a row of holes with one offset to provide a balance as well. I understand that I am using differing years and hence my resolve to better understand this prior to startup. I can get a flexplate with the transmission I am pulling (a 318 circa 92' a518) if needed. Any clarification is greatly appreciated. I will say that the flexplate that the converter was bolted to had similar holes.

On my 98 5.9l, the flexplate had actual weights welded to it, it wasn't balanced like you think yours may be, and I wasn't aware that they were balanced like that at all. I'm pretty sure converter weights are supposed to be on the front (engine side) of the converter but I don't have any experience with that transmission type.
If you are able to post some pics of both parts I'm sure we'll be able to identify them better and get you going.

And the flexplate.... I do not note any extra "weight" welded or otherwise on this.

if there were weights on it it, they would be on the opposite side up against the lip of the flexplate.

The '96 and later 5.9 converter has no external balance weight(s), the external balance weight is on the flexplate; any weights on the periphery of the converter are for mass balance, not external weight.
Also, the '96 converter has symmetrical 90° drive lugs while the '95 and earlier have asymmetric drive lugs so the '96 converter won't mate to the '95 and earlier flexplate.

It would only line up 3 of the 4 holes so I guess I need to acquire the flexplate that was with the converter. Also, there was no other weight on the underside. On a side note, are the bolts offset for proper balance to the crank? I am just tickled that this project is underway again, so your patience is appreciated.

Yes, on the '95 and earlier one drive lug was offset so that a weighted converter would be properly indexed in relation to the crank.
