The difference between an HP block and a non HP block is the 2 stamped letters H and P. They are exactly the same, you'll pay extra money for those 2 letters but gain NOTHING in strength.

what he said...if you are going to stroke it get the cheapest 440 block you can find. Not real smart paying $500 (or more) for a 69 block when you can get a 74 block for $250.

I agree...internals gave the HP a few extra ponies..plus a few articles support the low compression blocks of the 70's being stronger than the 60's blocks...I can't confirm that but I also am running a 440/1976/ stroked and bored to 498 for over 4 seasons

I personally would start with an older pre-73 block with the old deck design. Just what I would do.

with the thinner decked and walled later blocks.

Later blocks being "thin wall" has been proven to be a total myth.
I have never heard of the term "thinner decked".

I understand they say the myth of thinner walled blocks is a total myth, I totally disagree with that.
We have sonic checked blocks for hi-po builds and have had to limit the over bore because of core shift etc that causes thinner walls. People can do what ever they want its their money. And in my own opinion the later blocks with the re-design coolant passage decks are far more likely to detort at the surface due to lack of strength, that's why I prefer the older block and yes they sometimes have issues also.

Stay away from the 1967 year blocks. They were prone to cracking the first year. If you look on the 1968 and later 440 blocks they have a rib cast in the side of the block that looks like a big H, this is not on the 67 blocks. I have built many 440/500 motors and have always used 68 to 73 blocks without any problems. Just my input from experience that it at that.

I've always used the mid-late 70's 440 blocks without a problem. I don't believe in the thin wall myth. That's a chevy thing. Just like cast cranks being only good for scrap metal is a chevy thing. Just like "needing" 4-bolt mains to make over 150hp is a chevy thing. The mid 70's and up 440's got the improved larger thrust bearing as well as a small amount of extra webbing material on the outside of the block if memory serves.

you can take a cast crank 440 and make 500hp with not too much of a problem...and beat on it.

I agree. I love these blocks. Except for one teenie-weenie detail:
They spin bearings like babies soil diapers.
