finally got some time to take on a new motor project, just bought a good 340 uncut '70 block and a 4" steel crank and OEM length H beams, (I normally like to run the 2" journal SBC rods with the smaller pins but the $ was right) Anyway my first instinct for a 340 was to swap in the bottom end from my 318 mini stroker (6" alum rods on a 3.55 MP crank) to build a high revving ~370 incher and I got a nice victor 340 with the deal and I have a sweet little 255/260 @.050 .570-ish 0n 106 Harold Brookshire designed Lunati I got from Goldmember. That gives me the 4" I can build a 392" out of the 318 and drop in a tow rig (a 74 short wb fleetside dodge would be sweet). The dilemma is if I go ahead and do the 414 (should clean up at .20 over to use common 4.06" rings ) I'm pretty much gonna have to reuse my bowl/VJ cleaned up/pinch relieved (but otherwise off the shelf) E-heads, so I'm thinking I'm gonna be limited to about 480-500 horse even with a near optimum cam. I'll probably go this way since I got a couple people that want to buy the 341" Roller motor anyway, with an oil cooler it'll make a sweet streetable A body motor. What have you guys seen out of your 408-416's with stock E-heads? New/bigger port heads are out right now, got a kid in college!!

Thanks Andy, yeah I've got a 427" sb Ford with heads that flow just over 280 and it made 511 but with a lot less cam than this one will need. I gotta try to shift the torque up to a higher RPM, I know a few tricks to use on the Victor intake, my gut still says the 370" 3.55 stroke is a better fit for the short wheelbase Rocky but I've been itching to do another big arm SB Mopar since I first took a ride in Tom's F.A.S.T. Challenger. I'd love to find a worked set of W5's under my workbench somewhere (like the old days).

So what did the mini stroker 340 end up running in the Rocky?

Sounds like it will be a fun little machine. Here is a duster we freshed up. Used to have two 750's on a tunnel ram. It took quite a bit of convincing to get the customer to ditch the tunnel ram and go to a single 4, but once we did, it sure came alive! 562rwhp @ 7000rpm corrected if I remember correctly. Dyno run... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TJA2ScKligFirst pass off the trailer in 4000ish feet of air. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxaOtKWZU4Q&feature=relatedI believe he did get it into the 10.70's later that day. Now, with some SERIOUS Chassis tuning I expect it to go a bunch quicker yet! -Kenny

Kenny, That's with Stock unported Eheads? Bad340fish, car is still in progress, I didn't trust the 998 trans to hold the high RPM's so it just came out and I was about to put in a fresh 904 right when this 340 4" deal came through. My buddy has an airstrip in his yard (nice, huh?) and he's let me do some T&T to sort the launch but so far no timed runs. Lenny seemed to think it hooked well on little 26.5 QTP. Now it hooks hard on the 295/65R15 M/T's I just bought, hike's 'em a bit but not as hairy as I thought (thankfully). Larry, how ported are your heads? The cam is I think going to be perfect for the stroker, if I put in in the 341 I figure I'd be shifting around 6800-7000. I hate to sell this shortblock, the little sucker revs like a banshee

Thanks, Kenny! I was checking out your website, digging that 500 smallblock olds! I had a 10.5:1 455 loaded with Mondello goodies dropped into a 77 Seville, talk about a sleeper!! I'm gonna take the block down to the shop tomorrow and start with getting the shortblock sorted. Maybe I can horse trade enough for better heads by the time I get done with it. The heads as they are a perfect match for the little motor, maybe I can sell the whole long block

Dropped the block, crank and rods to the shop, Machinist and I were both marvelling at seeing an uncut 340....not many of them left around any more. He does a lot of small block Mopars and has the deck plates too....A BIG shout out to my good buddy David Kluttz (Crabman173 here on moparts, who is a for real top notch engine builder hisself!) for turning me on to Hollis Page at www.HPEngines.net in Norwood, N.C. I'm hoping it'll clean up at .020, nothing like a freshly machined big-bore small block, can't wait to get her back and put her on the stand. I'm pretty much known as a Big Block guy but the truth be told I really love those 340's, mainly 'cause my little 4 speed Dart used to put the right regularly on all those allegedly nasty big blocks back in the day....of course those W2's (that cost me a FORTUNE back then....but were WORTH IT!) probably helped a bit too

I hope it works out well for you. Those Eddie's work pretty good all things considered. I think they can work better than most give them credit. A larger valve would be nice, but I think if you just mildly hand port them you wont regret it. The 408 in the yellow Duster still had the 2.02's in them. Even my W2's are still the 2.02" valve, and they work great! Even with the 4.25" stroke under them I gained 91rwhp just by bolting the W2's on over my J heads, which had 2.05" intakes. Yes the ET didn't change much, mainly because the car has 3.23 gears instead of the 5.13's last year, and the tight 9" converter opposed to the looser 8" converter last year. The car picked up 6 mph with the W2's and with the smaller valve. -Kenny

Kenny, yeah I've always followed your stuff very closely, very cool and I'm hoping we can get to work together on a project some time, please keep me updated on the 500 SB olds, I first assumed that is had to be a 350 diesel block but the huge bores it has to be a 403....I always thought the 403 would be cool with a better casting that doesn't have the weak 'windowed' saddle webs. Isn't that block pretty weak or have you bolstered it somehow (I guess a girdle would help a ton). But I'm thinking there was one early year where the block had solid webs that was a lot stronger but rarer to find (you see I know more than just mopars ) The 350 diesel block is a hoss and still has a decent 4.07" (IIRC) correctly but I didn't think it could go to 500". I'm guessing you run a 455" 4.25" crank with an offset grind to run ???? journal/length rod? I re-tit;ed the post to cast a bigger net and catch the bracket racer results too, I didn't mean to infer I only wanted dyno data, I know most guys just run em straight off the stand.
