Looks like I have failed with my first 727 Torqueflite rebuild/repair. After driving the car (383 Barracuda) for a while with everything happening fine I loaded it a bit in low & a squeeling noise started that seems to relate with engine speed rather than wheel speed. The converter has a stall of over 2600 & I didn't get to 2000 before it sounded to load up & squeal. It still drives foward & reverse but it may want to creep in neutral, the trans was just up to temp but did not overheat, it is a cold night & I didn't have it loaded for long at all.
It's hard to tell if it is a rubbing noise or what, any ideas before I jack it up & take the pan off?

Broke the sprag (stator) in the converter.
My first guess.

Cheers Tom but I hope that is not the case as I just payed $500 to have my converter overhauled! Anything I can do to check it before I swap in another converter?

I did some more tests & hopefully this will mean something to some of you out there that have more experiance with transmissions than me.

The squeak/squeal is the same in all gears/positions except park, it is still there in park but muck quieter. It's hard to describe but it sounds like a dry rubber squeal

I haven't taken it back out on the highway but it seems to drive foward fine although it does need more gas to go in reverse, almost like the brakes are on a bit.

I think I'll check some pressures & check back here before I take the pan off.

I took the pan off & the valve body out, there didn't seem to be anything loose in the trans. Next I did an air test on the clutches, the front clutch worked fine but the rear clutch didn't. When I blew air into the rear clutch apply port it came out the port beside it which is the converter feed port!. So at the least it looks like I have blown the gasket between the front pump & case maybe the noise was oil passing between the ports the first time I heard it I did think it sounded like an air or vacuum leak.
