Looking for pictures of correct restored 1971 440 six-pack engine.

Looking for correct stampings, markings, tags, so on and so forth.

Can I reference a 440 six pack engine from a different year such as '69?

Check with Alan Gallant, handle on board 'anlauto'. I believe he retored a 71 sassy grass 440-6 cuda.

I've restored several 71 440+6's but I'm not going to stand on a soapbox and claim everything is 100% dead nuts correct.

This is MY interpretation of what I believe to be correct after years of research.

Nice work Alan. The carbs look nice as well, allot of good detailing but there are a couple plating related things I'd have done differently on them.

Thanks Scott..
That engine was done three years ago. I've learned more since then, as we all have.
Those are the original carbs restored by Gerry Luck.

One thing that I will say, is that all I did was bolt them on and have driven the crap out of the car with not one single carb issue. They run great.

My next carb(s) are coming your way.

that pcv valve looks like the 3 rib 1970 version, was the 71 pcv valve smooth?

Are those exhaust manifolds yellow or an odd shade of rust?

The exhaust manifolds were originally bolted on the engine assembly when painted,(reference Alan's engine pictures)so at one time they were the same color as the engine. After being driven for awhile the heat would eventually burn off most the orange paint. When I took these pictures of my engine it had only been run a few hours on the dyno. They still do have some orange paint on them just not as much now.

Alan,

Looks like the Drivers valve cover is a 70, is this an early production?

Odd. The heads are 71, yet that VC is 70.

This was for a 4 speed car?

Most early SPD '71 B-bodies have been documented as having '70 style covers, so I would "guess" E-bodies would follow the same rule of thumb.

Not surprised.

I'm in the process of putting together my 71 Challenger R/T 440+6 after being apart for 19 years. I've had 5 other 71 cars in the shop to reference off of and there seems to be no shortage of mid year changes.

Hey Jim, don't worry about doing that just throwing it out there for fun since the rest of the pics were so cool.

Hope this isn't a "stupid" question ............ Can you explain the black crayon numbers on each valve cover?

It should be only on one VC, but it should be the carb number from the build sheet. That code is 3 digits in 1970. If it was the same for 1971 this should be 670 instead of just 70. It's basicly that last three digits of the carb list number.

You must be referring to the orange Cuda....At first I thought you were talking about the engine picture I posted.
I don't see anything on mine....
If there is anything on the driver's side it would be "412"
which would be the "engine" code from the broadcast sheet.

Please don't ask me to remember what I did three years ago...I can't remember what I did three days ago...

Allan, your motor looks fantastic. I wish somebody would do a 71 440 hp 4bbl with an air grabber, correctly for reference

Plymouth's gonna getcha! There are 3 things that will live forever, cockroaches, Keith Richards, & slant 6 Dusters 71 gtx 440 4speed air grabber blue on blue with white vinyl roof
