Odd. The heads are 71, yet that VC is 70.
This was for a 4 speed car?

Most early SPD '71 B-bodies have been documented as having '70 style covers, so I would "guess" E-bodies would follow the same rule of thumb.

Not surprised.
I'm in the process of putting together my 71 Challenger R/T 440+6 after being apart for 19 years. I've had 5 other 71 cars in the shop to reference off of and there seems to be no shortage of mid year changes.

Yes....4spd car Again...I will not say this is 100% correct. Just how I perceive it to be
Hope this isn't a "stupid" question ............ Can you explain the black crayon numbers on each valve cover?

It should be only on one VC, but it should be the carb number from the build sheet. That code is 3 digits in 1970. If it was the same for 1971 this should be 670 instead of just 70. It's basicly that last three digits of the carb list number.

You must be referring to the orange Cuda....At first I thought you were talking about the engine picture I posted. I don't see anything on mine.... If there is anything on the driver's side it would be "412" which would be the "engine" code from the broadcast sheet. Please don't ask me to remember what I did three years ago...I can't remember what I did three days ago...
