Anyone know what's used for or have a photo of the nuts/fasteners for a '68 road runner trunk finish panel? It uses 13 of them and I have speed nuts that I thought were put away for the panel but there are only 10 in a bag that I forgot to or didn't label duh so now I'm not sure they are the correct fasteners?

Thanks,

MikeR

I seem to remember them being speed-nuts, but my last '68 Decor Car restoration was 15 years ago. If you look at the threads on the studs, coarse cuts on pointed studs mean speed-nuts. Fine machine threads will of course mean captive-washer machine nuts. I seem also to recall the nuts having some rubber or dum-dum to seal them and prevent rust from carving through the barely-painted inner surface. Going even further out on this weak limb, I think they took a 3/8" socket.

speed nuts,

Not on my car and I'm sure I was the first to remove my panel as it was mostly org paint when I got it.
Here's a pic and note the cup style washer that holds the sealer.

I had those same style nuts and washers on my 68 GTX finish panel when I took it off for a quote to repair.

Washers yes, but the GTX should have speed nuts as the studs are cast.

GTX uses those washers with speed nuts. To my knowledge no one is popping those washers. I need them for mine. With out them the panel does not sit correctly

Ran down to the local Ace Hardware just after I posted because I did a quick search of their Sunday hours and they closed at 4:00 so I didn't see the post until I got back....late. They didn't have those acorn type speed nuts but I took another old un-restored trunk finish panel with me into Ace and the threads are 10-24 so I got 15 nuts with a serrated washer attached and 15 cupped washers with a rubber washer attached to the metal (photos later) and they worked pretty good. I think what is supposed to happen is the holes in the trunk lid are 3/8" in diameter for alignment "slop" and there are foam washers that fit over the 10-24 studs on the panel and the foam washers should fill the 3/8" trunk lid holes and moosh(is that a word ) into the cupped washers to keep water and dirt out. I don't (think) I'm having a fitment problem with the slightly cupped washers that I'm using but I'll have to take another look tomorrow, seem to work. Did all of them with the 10-24 nuts and slightly cupped washers.....no way a speed nut would pull the finish panel against the trunk lid with speed nuts IMO.

Thanks for all of the replies

Oh, I didn't know this about Ace Hardware but when I went to the check-out carrying the old trunk finish panel I told the two ladies behind the counter that I just have these nuts and washers and that I brought this big piece of metal thing in with me and one of them said "Are you sure you didn't get that in our automotive restoration department, you know we have everything at Ace".............had I known about those deep cupped washers John before I went there I would have challanged them on that statement.......would have been funny if they ended up having them too

Yep, somewhere in their 4,000+ page catalog and same day service .........I've actually ordered things from them for out company at 8:00 am and had them deliver it by 11:00 that same morning; helps if you have one of their distribution centers less than a hour away too Great company.

I'll have to check out Ace. Never noticed those beveled washers there. Need to take another look around there.
