Is there enough material on a 70 Duster axle to be drilled out to 4.5"? I think it is an 8 3/4". I haven't seen the car and am trying to help a friend convert to disc brakes from a distance. He thinks it was originally an 8 1/4" axle.

Sure, we used to do it all the time, before there were so many options.

Best deal is to weld the old holes shut and then drill the new pattern to accept 1/2" screw in studs rather than the knurled press ins. That way there is very close to the same amount of meat left between the stud and the lip of the flange as there was on the old 7/16 knurled press in studs.

Have some truck axles cut down, properly looking at comparable money and you end up with a better product and can sell the SBP axles to someone who wants them, probably come out money ahead.

You've been given good advice.
If you have the SBP axels redone, you also
need to have the drums redrilled too.
Runs about $125.00 to do two axels & drums.

If you have truck or "C" body axels cut and
resplined, yes you do end up with stronger
axels, but it does require changing over to
"B" or "C" body brakes also because the axles
will sit out a bit more than the "A" axels do.

My 71 Duster had the axles redrilled to the 4.5 pattern. The 4.5 pattern put the holes right at the edge of the axle, I wasn't too crazy about it.

Exactly why I prefer screw in studs. There is very near as much meat around the stud as with the pressed in small suds on the 4" pattern.

A 70 Duster had a 7-1/4 or an 8-3/4. You need to know what he has first. The cheapest alternative is a junkyard 8-1/4 that is already big bolt, but watch the gear ratios. The one I pulled for somebody else was a 2.45:1 (no, that's not a typo). I don't like the redrilling for several reasons, but the big one is that now you have brakes that are already hard to get drums for, but if you need them you'll have to get them drilled out, too.

Looks like he is now giving new axles from Moser a strong consideration. Thanks for the info guys!

I stock high-strength 5 x 4 1/2" A-body axles with bearings and studs installed.

E-mail me if you are interested.

My Barracuda is drilled and has the screw in cap screws for lugs. Mazzolini did that for $90 in 1993. From what I know now, I'm allmost sure he subbed that out to Sutton Engineering. I've put about 50K very hard miles on them over that last 15 years!!

The rear drums are getting pretty warn though. I do run a adjustable MP brake valve though and 11.75 front disks.

My use/abuse and milage would cover about 98% of the A-body owner here though.

I would go with DR Diff over Moser and I would NEVER redrill stock flanges. For a couple of hundered bucks more you can have some much stronger axles. -Bob

Theres nothing wrong with redrilling the axles.
I used bolts 4 years on the street,4,ooo miles/yr . The last year at the strip, I ran 10. 80s. 10.5 slicks.and did not have any issues. I welded the holes redrilled the holesin the axles and drums.

I guess the tech inspector never looked. If you use a locked rear or run faster than 10.99 you must use aftermarket axles for most if not all sanctioning bodies. -Bob
