Me, 1981 Nats. The plaque on display under the hood is a large version of the dash plaque. Each of the participating clubs received one. I have it hanging on the wall in the room I am now. OF course we drove the car to the meet, almost 400 miles each way. Probably has just about 20k on it at the time. Check out the CB antenna on the trunk.

Doug, I've noticed that you've outgrown the need for a comb?
I have 4 very full albums of early nat's pix - now I need to go buy a scanner to upload them.

The "talk-of-the-meet" was the Canadian 1970 Hemi Coronet R/T Convertible with the "tree growing through the floorboard" story which had just been restored... said at the time to have been "1 of 1", now I believe that I have heard there were two.

Keep the pictures rolling! Very cool to see as I would have been 3 years old in 81.

Please do!!! The scanner that I use most often now is part of a Kodak "All-In-One" ESP 3250 scanner/copier/printer that I bought at Walmart for $89.00, and the ink cartridges are about half the cost of most brands. Not the best home use equipment, but more than good enough at a low cost.

Yes, I have changed, but the car has done a whole lot better than me through the years.

I also appreciate you guys posting the old photos of the early days. In 1981 I was only 10. But in my defense I have been going to the Mopar Nationals since I was 16 or 17 (1989). Tippytoe and I drove from Indiana in a light blue VW rabbit. I know we were making a statement. We just weren't old enough to be there from the begining but I'm sure if we could have we would have. Oh and isn't the other 1970 hemi r/t convertible sublime in color? Thanks again guys.

What I find hard to grasp is bringing a '71 Cuda to the '81 Mopar Nats would be like bringing a 2000 model today.

Yep, most participants drove their cars to the meet, and most of the trailered ones where on open trailers. That all changed quickly during the first great run-up in Mopar musclecar prices in the mid to late 1980s...

Tonight I will post some pictures from the trip itself, as well as the hotel to track to hotel drives during the meet. Also, sorry for the large file sizes of the pictures that I am posting. They are 850 x 1100 pixels for decent borderless printing on 8.5 inch by 11 inch photo paper on an inkjet or laser printer. Also, the original prints have developed a bleached out or tinted look, so after scanning the image, I crop and run several enhancements on them... which don't always work well on some pictures.

Attached is a before & after example of a scanned picture.

Preparing the two cars for the looong drive to St Louis. In addition to cleaning/detailing and regular maintenance, we put together small "road kits" for roadside repairs if necessary. But unlike today, most needed items were available at any local auto parts store, and a 15 year old counter guy would not ask if a 426 Hemi was a V6 or V8... yes, that has happened to me twice.

The GTX lead most of the way with chief navigator Ken using gas station maps for guidance... no Garmin, Tom-Tom, Etc back then... and no cell phones that were affordable. Some times the lead would stretch out... the GTX from the `Cuda:

The `Cuda is coming up to talk... usually someone needed fuel, food, or relief... generally it was fuel for the `Cuda. With 4.10 gears and a smaller fuel tank than the 3.54 geared GTX, the `Cuda was the driver for breaks. One day I will have to post the story how I ran another friend's 2.76 geared 318 Charger out of fuel with my 3.54 geared `Cuda 440-6 during another out of state Mopar meet trip... plenty of pictures too!

XS29 do you have any pictures at the drag strip in Milan or St.Louis. That is were my car spent all its time. At the Chrysler Proving Grounds I just left it on the trailer.

As P1970 said, those were the days when paint dabs did not matter and having fun did.
